A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 2), by George R. R. Martin

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. Two great leaders—Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon—who hold sway over an age of enforced peace are dead, victims of royal treachery. Now, from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Here is the second volume in George R.R. Martin magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R.R. Martin stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Amazon.com Review
How does he do it? George R.R. Martin's high fantasy weaves a spell sufficient to seduce even those who vowed never to start a doorstopper fantasy series again (the first book--A Game of Thrones--runs over 700 pages). A Clash of Kings is longer and even more grim, but Martin continues to provide compelling characters in a vividly real world.

The Seven Kingdoms have come apart. Joffrey, Queen Cersei's sadistic son, ascends the Iron Throne following the death of Robert Baratheon, the Usurper, who won it in battle. Queen Cersei's family, the Lannisters, fight to hold it for him. Both the dour Stannis and the charismatic Renly Baratheon, Robert's brothers, also seek the throne. Robb Stark, declared King in the North, battles to avenge his father's execution and retrieve his sister from Joffrey's court. Daenerys, the exiled last heir of the former ruling family, nurtures three dragons and seeks a way home. Meanwhile the Night's Watch, sworn to protect the realm from dangers north of the Wall, dwindle in numbers, even as barbarian forces gather and beings out of legend stalk the Haunted Forest.

Sound complicated? It is, but fine writing makes this a thoroughly satisfying stew of dark magic, complex political intrigue, and horrific bloodshed. --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly
The second novel of Martin's titanic Song of Ice and Fire saga (A Game of Thrones, 1996) begins with Princess Arya Stark fleeing her dead father's capital of King's Landing, disguised as a boy. [...] In between [the beginning and the end], her actions map the further course of a truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last 10 years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect by the scrupulous and unscrupulous alike. Standout characters besides Arya include Queen Cersei, so lacking in morals that she becomes almost pitiable; the queen's brother, the relentlessly ingenious dwarf Tyrion Lannister; and Arya's brother, Prince Brandon, crippled except when he runs with the wolves in his dreams. The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail that dramatically increases narrative length even as it aids suspension of disbelief; for the comparatively modest role of magic (although with one ambitious young woman raising a trio of dragons, that may change in future volumes)... Martin may not rival Tolkien or Robert Jordan, but he ranks with such accomplished medievalists of fantasy as Poul Anderson and Gordon Dickson. Here, he provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites—and this is only the second course of a repast with no end in sight. Author tour.

From Library Journal
A war for succession as king of the realm pits brother against brother in a battle of armies and politics. Caught in the struggle are seven noble families whose fortunes and lives depend on how well they play the game of intrigue, blackmail, kidnapping, treachery, and magic. Martin has created a rich world filled with characters whose desires for love and power drive them to extremes of nobility and betrayal. Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones (Spectra, 1996). Recommended for most fantasy collections.

Hardcore Action, Hardcore Fantasy. No One Does it Better
By Andres R. Guevara
During one of those endless nights when I just couldn't put Clash of Kings down, I wondered: "Why aren't there more books like this?" George Martin has created one of those most deeply involving and satisfying series out there. In only two books, he has crafted real characters involved in the horrors of war. Many of the reviews below accurately describe the way that Martin creates characters of grey, rather than comic book black and whites. Many of the scenes in the book fit well with dark and somber lighting. This is not your daddy's fantasy novel.
Martin's characters bring a more realistic spin on knighthood and war. Cersei describes it best to young Sansa when she destroys the young girl's romantic view of knights by remarking that knights are for killing, nothing more or less. And kill they do. The battle scenes are raw and unglamorous, like the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan. Its all very realistic and gritty and heck, it makes sense: what do you really think happens when a not-so-sharp sword is swung haphazardly at another person: I've never seen it firsthand, but I'm sure its not pretty. It may be an oxymoron to claim that a fantasy book can be realistic, but this series is: after seeing the battle scenes in Braveheart or Gladiator, I have a deeper understanding of the horrors of sword fighting in, say, the medieval times in English history. Martin's story is realistic in the sense that it doesn't gloss over the horror and pain and terror of battles and the rage of the people who fight them.
Martin's series is a hardcore fantasy adventure for adults. While other authors cater predominately to a younger fantasy audience, Martin seems to write for the "college and beyond" crowd (at 31, I'm well beyond). Sex scenes, like the battles, are not glamorous in the least. Whereas characters in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series constantly blush and stumble at the very thought of even kissing a girl, Martin's characters think lewd thoughts, perform graphic sex scenes, etc. Yes, its not for all ages, or for every taste, but for those of us who are tired of the same old antiseptic stuff, Martin is a mature breathe of fresh air.
Meanwhile, he continues to awe me with his story telling. The different kings are now in open conflict with each other. Whereas Game of Thrones focused on the Starks v. the Lannisters, in this installment, it seems as if the entire land is in termoil, with no less than six kings fighting each other and attacking each other. The battles are terrific, including the climactic battle. (no spoilers here)
One other note I feel compelled to make is that Martin has created strong and independant female characters in his series. People might assume, based on the reviews, that this is a male-dominated story. Nothing could be further from the truth. Martin spends as much time writing about the female characters (Sansa, Arya, Catelyn Stark) as the male characters, and the female characters rule (i.e. Cersei) and fight battles (I won't reveal any specifics on this point except to say that Martin introduces two female warriors.)
Martin has created a real world, with all the vices of our own, and given all his characters life. Here's hoping that other writers take note.

Superlative series; GRRM does it again!!!
By MISTER SJEM
First off, I'm a heavy duty fan of GRRM. I've read over a 100 different fantasy authors in my time (started at 12; I'm now 32). Took about 5 years off from the genre b/c I felt it was all getting too formulaic and cliched. Typical archetype character who turns out to be the missing heir or boy wonder who saves the world against the Dark Lord.
So, when I came back to fantasy at the end of 1999, I read the usual: Goodkind, Jordan, etc. and then someone told me about GRRM and man, that was the kicker!
Here are the reasons to choose GRRM. I've also listed the reasons not to choose him to make it fair b/c I know their are certain personalities who won't like this series:
WHY TO READ GRRM
(1) YOU ARE TIRED OF FORMULAIC FANTASY: good lad beats the dark lord against impossible odds; boy is the epitome of good; he and all his friends never die even though they go through great dangers . . . the good and noble king; the beautiful princess who falls in love with the commoner boy even though their stations are drastically different . . . the dark lord is very evil and almost one sided at times . . . you get the idea. After reading this over and over, it gets old.
(2) YOU ARE TIRED OF ALL THE HEROES STAYING ALIVE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE UNDER CONSTANT DANGER: this gets even worse where the author kills a main hero off but that person comes back later in the story. Or, a hero does die but magic brings him back.
This sometimes carries to minor characters where even they may not die, but most fantasy authors like to kill them off to show that some risked the adventure and perished.
(3) YOU ARE A MEDIEVAL HISTORY BUFF: this story was influenced by the WARS OF THE ROSES and THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR.
(4) YOU LOVE SERIOUS INTRIGUE WITHOUT STUPID OPPONENTS: lots of layering; lots of intrigue; lots of clever players in the game of thrones. Unlike other fantasy novels, one side, usually the villain, is stupid or not too bright.
(5) YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BIASED OPINIONS AND DIFFERENT TRUTHS: GRRM has set this up where each chapter has the title of one character and the whole chapter is through their viewpoint. Interesting tidbit is that you get their perception of events or truths. But, if you pay attention, someone else will mention a different angle of truth in the story that we rarely see in other novels. Lastly and most importantly, GRRM doesn't try to tell us which person is right in their perception. He purposelly leaves it vague so that we are kept guessing.
(6) LEGENDS: some of the most interesting characters are those who are long gone or dead. We never get the entire story but only bits and pieces; something that other fantasy authors could learn from to heighten suspense. Additionally, b/c the points of views are not congruent, we sometimes get different opinions.
(7) WORDPLAY: if you're big on metaphors and description, GRRM is your guy. Almost flawless flow.
(8) LOTS OF CONFLICT: all types, too; not just fighting but between characters through threats and intrigue.
(9) MULTILAYERED PLOTTING; SUB PLOTS GALORE: each character has their own separate storyline; especially as the story continues and everyone gets scattered. This is one of the reasons why each novel is between 700-900 pages.
(10) SUPERLATIVE VARIED CHARACTERS: not the typical archetypes that we are used to in most fantasy; some are gritty; few are totally evil or good; GRRM does a great job of changing our opinions of characters as the series progress. This is especially true of Jaime in book three.
(11) REALISTIC MEDIEVAL DIALOGUE: not to the point that we can't understand it but well done.
(12) HEAPS OF SYMOBLISM AND PROPHECY: if you're big on that.
(13) EXCELLENT MYSTERIES: very hard to figure out the culprits; GRRM must have read a lot of mystery novels.
(14) RICHLY TEXTURED FEMALE CHARACTERS: best male author on female characters I have read; realistic on how women think, too.
(15) LOW MAGIC WORLD: magic is low key; not over the top so heroes can't get out of jams with it.
REASON TO NOT READ GRRM
(1) YOU LIKE YOUR MAIN CHARACTERS: GRRM does a good job of creating more likeable characters after a few die. But, if that isn't your style, you shouldn't be reading it. He kills off several, not just one, so be warned.
(2) DO NOT CARE FOR GRITTY GRAY CHARACTERS: if you like more white and gray characters, this may unsettle you. I suggest Feist or Goodkind or Dragonlance if you want a more straight forward story with strong archetypes.
(3) MULTIPLE POINTS OF VIEWS TURN YOU OFF: if you prefer that the POVS only go to a few characters, this might be confusing for you.
(4) SWEARING, SEX: there's a lot of it in this book just as there is in real life. If you have delicate ears, this book may upset you.
(5) YOU DEMAND CLOSURE AT THE END OF EVERY BOOK: this isn't the case for all stories in the series. Some are still going on; some have been resolved; others have been created and are moving on.
(6) IF YOU WANT A TARGET OR SOMEONE TO BLAME: this can be done to some extent but not as much. This is b/c he doesn't try to make anyone necessarily good or evil.
(7) ARCHETYPES: some readers like archetypal characters because it's comfortable; we like the good young hero (sort of like Pug in Feist's THE RIFTWAR SAGA); it's familiar and we sometimes like to pretend we're this upcoming, great hero. You wont' get much of this in GRRM with the exception of one or two characters. There really aren't any super heroes compared to all the other characters as it's more grittier and no one is shooting fireballs every milisecond or carrying around some super powerful sword.
(8) LENGTH: you don't want to get into a long fantasy epic series. In that case, look for shorters works as this is biiig.
(9) PATRIARCHY: men are most of the main characters with lots of power (one female exception). While this is realistic of the medieval era, some readers may not prefer this if they want more girl power, so to speak.
By the way, if you don't want to commit to a big book until you know the author better, check out his short story, THE HEDGE KNIGHT, in LEGENDS. Overall, this is a great series and I happily purchase the hard cover when it comes out...

A Clash of Quality
By Denton56
I loved Game of Thrones. Seriously, loved it. It shattered all my built up pessimism towards fantasy and kept me quite addicted in a scary way. I had to finish it at all costs. Towards the end I realized that I'd better get the rest of the series quick so when I finish the Thrones I can keep on right away. Well I did finish and I did continue on immediately with Clash of Kings.

But something odd happened. As the first pages flew by in a fever of needing to know what happened next, I started to notice myself reading at a much slower pace. Eventually I started drifting ahead and accidentally skipping passages. I had to put the book down and take a break. So I did for a few days. Then I picked it up again and still found myself moving somewhat sluggishly.

That is Clash of Kings ultimate curse. There are parts of this book that really drag on. Just about every character can claim more than one slow chapter in the story, and they start to add up too much in the middle. At some points you will have to will yourself through this book. Yes I know it's a 1000 pages so what did I expect, but did it have to be that long? Game of Thrones is long, but it moves at a rapid pace and tells a very tight story. There's much to trim here, or at least to substitute.

Then there are little things. Like take for instance the aforementioned Kings that clash. Of the five major ones, none have their own character chapters. Granted four of them do have their actions mentioned by characters near them, but one doesn't even have that (save for a visit from another character). Another one was built up as a main character in the first book (and a bad ass one at that), and is hardly mentioned as most of his actions aren't even followed directly. It's a waste of a great character in a world of evil bastards. Another King is mentioned heavily early as a very interesting plot develops around him, then he just disappears. He's mentioned only when people talk of him not being there or doing anything, and then he's just there again. It's a great moment, but illustrates another problem with the book.

Because when he does arrive he's carrying with him a deus ex machina that is hard to swallow. What happens is hinted at, but when it happens it feels sudden and ill played. Then they do it again right away. See it involves some of those fantasy elements, which is perfectly fine. The series handles that stuff with care and intrigue like all other things. But there is now suddenly a lot of it in the book , and the sudden change of style is dizzying sometimes. This particular instance also seems to be too much of an easy way out, Superman traveling back in time style. There is no given reason that this character shouldn't be doing what they do more often, save for some tricky moral issues and some bullcrap about nobility before a very large battle. Just an odd plot device.

I already grow tired of hating this book though, so let me tell you why to read it. For one thing, the Tyrion and Arya chapters are never boring. Not once. They have great moments carried out by two of the greatest characters in the series so far. In trying to avoid spoilers I'll just say that Tyrion gets a whiff of power and does many things with it, Arya is caught up in a story that is absolutely riveting. There is a strong argument to be made in re-reading this book many times and just reading her chapters. Not only is her development substantial, but her situations are quite frankly frightening at times. There's a part with a man named the tickler and a gang of others that is a downright horror movie. And towards the end her paths unite with a man who instantly becomes one of the most intriguing in the series. His presence and actions are one of the few untainted in the name of good moments, and he leaves you with a mystery as interesting as any so far.

The battle scene at the end though really is a page turner. It's not overtly complex, but rather takes a great many things set up prior, and just knocks them down. The right characters get the right page time to give the full details of it, and by the end you'll be breathless. And truthfully while there are some character stories who seem particularly drawn out (Danerys and Bran come to mind) there is a lot of well contributed good stuff from most everyone involved. There are individual moments here that are incredible, there are lines that will make you clap with their brilliance, and there are twists every bit as shocking as the first book.

In the end this is about a 600 page story put into a 969 page book. If you can handle that you're in for a great story. Just know it's an uphill battle to get there.

Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare

Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–02 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centres on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as a boy) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man. The play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder expected of the occasion, with plot elements drawn from the short story "Of Apollonius and Silla" by Barnabe Rich, based on a story by Matteo Bandello. The first recorded performance was on 2 February 1602, at Candlemas, the formal end of Christmastide in the year's calendar. The play was not published until its inclusion in the 1623 First Folio.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-In this verbal and visual treat, readers have the opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies. Coville's author's note explains that his prose adaptation is "not meant as a replacement for the original, but as an appetizer for the greater feast still to come." Thus, the story is clear and carefully told, making it easy both to follow the primary and secondary plot lines and to appreciate the intricacies of their interweavings. Coville keeps the flavor of the playwright's poetic language by using actual quotes from the play and expressions and a formal sentence structure true to the style of Elizabethan times. Delightful full-page, colored pen-and-ink illustrations add just the right touch of humor to the already wacky tale. Raglin gives a distinctive identity to all of the characters, despite their attempted disguises, and he does a particularly good job of differentiating the buffoons of the subplot from the more realistically drawn dramatis personae. Colors and designs clearly suggest the Italian court dress of the times, and accurate architectural details add life to the settings. More suited to modern audiences than Charles and Mary Lamb's classic Tales from Shakespeare (Signet, 1986), and far better written than Jan Dean's Twelfth Night (Oxford, 2002), this is a version that will have young listeners begging to portray the Bard's scenes onstage. And, isn't that, after all, the whole point?-Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. The latest in Coville's series of retold Shakespearean plays, this volume provides a short, prose version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy that offers young people such promising elements as separated twins, a woman disguised as a man, a drunken buffoon, courtship, swordplay, mistaken identity, and a practical joke. Though simplified, the story is intact and bits of the original language are preserved. Large-scale ink drawings, warmed with tints of color and shaded with cross-hatching, clearly depict the action. As Coville states in his Author's Note, "Twelfth Night remains one of the most read and performed of Shakespeare's plays." Children looking for a preperformance introduction to the play's twisting plot will find this an appealing choice. Carolyn Phelan

'The combination of careful scholarship emphasising the inspiration and excitement of the theatrical experience, with the freshly edited text, should make this one of the most useful new texts of Twelfth Night.' Theatre Journal

Excellent addition to your 12 Night shelf
By Sammy Clemens
There are several really worthwhile editions of 12th Night, but don't overlook this one.

The Foreword and notes are excellent and useful; the format's sturdy and readable.

It's a good copy to have for the scholar/performer/director.

Understanding Shakespeare
By Amazon Customer
For a long time I would not let my students use No Fear because I wanted them to be able to read the play in Shakespeare's words, but when I tired to discuss the plays with them, I always felt like I was the only who read the play. (I use it for Hamlet as well.) After I let them use it the first time, I was so excited to hear my students' comments on the play because they actually understood what they were reading. When they write about the play and when we discuss it, we use Shakespeare's words. We also compare the modern words and Shakespeare's words. I really like the No Fears and recommend them to people who really want to understand Shakespeare. I have taught high school and am now teaching at a university, so I know the No Fears are great on both levels.

Naxos complete recording the best so far
By F. Behrens
Please notice that G.H.'s in-house review above does not refer to the recording pictured above, nor do any of the reviews so far. What follows refers only to the Naxos set.
There are now three complete recordings of available. We have the older and elegantly read version on Harper Audio with Dorothy Tutin as the best Viola of the lot. Acted with a bit more verve though with less poetry is the Arkangel Shakespeare recording with a Scottish Malvolio and a cast of younger sounding actors who are making names for themselves in Great Britain. However I am very impressed with the "Twelfth Night" that is one of the latest additions to the Naxos Classic Drama series.
By far, this is the best-produced "Twelfth Night." One actually feels he is hearing an actual stage performance with all of the action but with the loss of none of the poetry. Perhaps the Viola does sound a little maturer than imagination would have her and the Sir Toby Belch a little less belchy sounding than others. None of the Festes sing as marvelously as did Peter Pears on the long deleted Marlowe Society recording (also with Tutin); however, on this Naxos set David Timson stays nicely in tune--and directs the production to boot. And he keeps things moving neatly along, which is saying a lot for Shakespeare recordings.
The CD version has the advantage of excellent tracking cues for not only each scene but for key points within the scene. The Harper CDs give a new track only for each new scene and the tapes (of course) are quite useless in that regard. The Arkangel series at present exists only on tapes but they are planning to reissue the entire series on CDs. So this Naxos release is the one of choice so far.

India's Muslim Spring: Why is Nobody Talking about It?, by Hasan Suroor

This book focuses on the current Muslim mood in India, particularly that of the youth who are trying to move the community into a new more positive direction. Despite a marked increase in religiosity and an assertion of Muslim identity, young Muslims are more secular and forward-looking than the older generation. They also have a strong sense of belonging to India, and see no contradiction between being proud Indians and proud Muslims at the same time.

Keen to draw a line under the past, they are harbingers of India s equivalent of Muslim spring .

An Unconvincing effort on India's Muslim Spring
By Raghu Nathan
I am familiar with Hassan Suroor’s essays and articles in ‘The Hindu’ on subjects related to secularism in India, Indian Muslims and Muslims in the UK. He has always been a credible journalist on these issues. However, the title of this book came as a surprise to me because I had not come across him write on this subject in the columns of ‘The Hindu’ so far. Naturally, I had to read it straight away, because secular Indians cannot have enough of the good news that the title promised - especially in today’s atmosphere of distrust and suspicion towards muslims wherever they are in a minority.

The author’s thesis in the book is briefly as follows:
There is a pleasant spring breeze blowing in the world of India’s muslims today in so far as their outlook and mood are concerned. They are no longer mired in self- pity and victimhood. Instead, young Indian Muslims are introspective and are vigorously engaging in debates on the challenges facing their 177-million strong community. They are looking for ways to pull themselves up by their own efforts instead of blaming others for their problems. The Mullahs have been gradually pushed aside in representing their community; instead, education, jobs and economic advance have taken more centre-stage in their consciousness, just as it is with Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains and Parsis. As a result, the younger generation does not feel the identity crisis that their parents felt and hence feel more comfortable in asserting their ‘Muslim-ness’ by wearing the hijab or being more religious than their parents or even doing the Haj even as they are young. In this endeavour, the author calls for more support from the majority community for the flowering of this spring by not harping on muslims to answer provocative questions like, ‘are you Indian first or Muslim first?’ or accuse them as ‘Babur ki aulad’. He asks the police not to immediately pounce on young muslims and take them into custody the moment a terror attack takes place. He wants the media to give more space to these ‘modern younger muslims’ in their TV and written forms, instead of always asking a regressive mullah or an avowed political polemicist to represent the muslim viewpoint, as it happens now. Some of the young muslims whom Suroor interviewed for research on this book said to him that ‘ India is the safest and best place for Muslims to live’ and that they have never faced discrimination in India. One young man even said that the muslim leadership could have shown grace and offered to relocate the Babri mosque in order for the Hindu community to build a temple for Ram on a spot they have revered for centuries.

It is indeed heart-warming for me to read such inclusive sentiments in today’s BJP-inspired vitiated atmosphere of communal relations where I see Muslims being displaced from their homes due to the engineered riots in Muzaffarnagar and Gujarat. At the same time, I feel that the book is quite short on empirical evidence to accept that such a spring is upon us and that it is only because of the negativity of the media that we don’t experience it. For example, having come from Tamilnadu, I see empirical evidence everyday around me for the claim that the ‘reservation’ policy has made a huge difference to the Backward Castes in the state, irrespective of the media. One doesn’t see such pervasive evidence of the muslim spring yet in India. Most of the interviewees in the book are urban young muslims from Aligarh, Lucknow or Delhi. It does not include the different denominations among muslims and even the author himself says elsewhere that Indian muslims are not a single monolithic block, all thinking the same at any given time. There are no interviews with rural muslims or muslims from southern India. I would make bold to say that if northern Indian muslims feel so positive of their future, then it must be even better in the less communal and more development-focused south. But, even in Tamilnadu or Kerala, one does not easily experience such a spring in public life in the cities.

There are other points as well in the book that I have a beef with. The author, while very critical of the mullahs and Deobandi clerics, rates the demolition of the Bari Masjid as a defining moment in alienating Indian muslims. There is no doubt it is so but it is also mainly due to the mullahs raising this issue to such a life and death question, aided by well-meaning secular Hindus. Looking at it dispassionately, surely, the Gujarat 2002 pogrom or the recent riots in Muzaffarnagar are more devastating blows to the muslims than the demolition of a mosque which was not even in use. By raising the masjid demolition to such a high level, I think the author has played into the hands of the clerics he criticises. Elsewhere, the author says that today’s young muslims are pragmatic by even voting for BJP in Gujarat after 2002. The truth may be is that they are so intimidated by the thuggery of what they experienced in 2002 rather than pragmatism. The author is extremely critical of the Congress party in the way it played the muslim ‘vote bank’ under the disguise of secularism. I agree with the author on this fully. Still, when it comes to the safety and security of muslims in India, it is more likely that they will always be safer under the Congress and other secular regional parties like the DMK, AIADMK, JD(U), TMC etc instead of the BJP and its parivar. At times in the book, I felt that the message is confusing and less hopeful. On the one hand, it is about the resurgence of young muslims and the retreat of the regressive forces among Indian muslims. On the other hand, there is a contradictory message of doubt about the larger Indian polity - the people, the state, the police, the media etc - on whether they will support this spring to flourish. I believe Mr. Suroor should be more hopeful because even in the big 2014 victory of Narendra Modi, only 30% of the people voted for the BJP and even all this 30% cannot have done so for sectarian reasons. It would be impossible for any minority in India to prosper if the Hindu majority is not secular and inclusive. The fact that all Indian minorities having prospered ahead of the Hindus in living standards gives us hope for the Muslims too, however tortuous the path may be, due to the legacy of partition.

One other issue is with the question of reservations and quotas for muslims as recommended by the Ranganath Mishra Commission. Even though some of the young muslims interviewed in the book have spoken against ‘reservations and quotas’ for muslims, I wish the author had thrown in his support on this key issue. Surely, there is no doubt that muslims must be considered an economically backward community as they are the only minority group which has a lower standard of living in India than the Hindus but still not covered by affirmative action. It is important to stress that reservations will help to improve their lot just as it has done for OBCs, SCs and STs in India. All the four Southern states have reservations for muslims ( as much as 12% in Kerala) and it has gone a long way in their upliftment, whereas UP, which has a large muslim population, has no quota for muslims.

In some total, it is a ‘feel good’ book about Indian muslims. However, the author needs to write more on the subject to convince even his admirers like me!

INDIA'S MUSLIM SPRING : Why is Nobody Talking about It?
- Hasan Suroor

Hasan Suroor is the ex Hindu correspondent in Europe. This book was very well rated by the literary critics and I was tempted to read it.

Book is good at problem identification...very journalistic type...but the scholarly treatment a subject like this requires is missing.

Suroor is bang on in terms of problem identification. Muslims have been exploited by the political class; India suffers a leadership deficit when it comes to Muslim political leaders; rump leaders exploit the insecurities of the minorities with imagined victimisation; no access to education and jobs; things have got worse in the post 9/11 - post Ayodhya - post Godhra world; terror and Islam being used as interchangeable worlds; . These are issues which should worry every thinking secular liberal Indian. As someone who grew up in liberal Hyderabad ( pre 1980s), I find the intolerant, Bajrang Dal/MIM mentality of India today nauseating.

Suroor picks up some anecdotal examples of modern, forward thinking Muslims and thinks that there will be change and also a revolution...hence the title Muslim Spring..I don't agree with his few examples of bright young kids working in Media, IT, Social Sector in can change the world of the 270 million muslims in India. We really need a revolution. For that we will need forward thinking, enlightened Political leaders who could be role models to the more than 70% of the population which is young. Not the uber liberals...whom the community cannot connect with nor the left wing atheist types.....what we need is balanced political leaders who love their religion, happy practicing the faith and also work..on the real issues of the community...like education / jobs/ economic upliftment.

Sachar committee recommendations which have been buried some where in the byzantine bureaucracy of ours need to be acted upon, provide access to education / vocational skills ...not in Madarassas but in good schools that will provide access to jobs ,build enterprise in the community.....and all this can happen...if some excellent leaders spring up from somewhere....problem is ..Where are the leaders...? Salman Khurshid seems to be one...but he is a bit of a light weight and his party is famous for exploiting the Muslim vote bank. Ditto for MJ Akbar....but his political choices are questionable. The MIM types are detestable..ditto for the few worthies in UP...What we need is possibly charismatic Muslims who are successful to come forward and lead them....can't think of too many....Premji ( too much of wealth at stake for him to get into politics ? Possibly someone from the world of entertainment or sports - these are places where we have so many stellar success stories of Muslims...Aamir or Shahrukh Khan ? Javed AKhthar ? or even sportsmen like Zaheer Khan...unblemished reputations and perfect role models....

With all the political parties exploiting the minority votes ....and perpetuating the status quo if not making it worse.....we need some enlightened leaders...who will focus on the right things like education, jobs, economic upliftment....and ONLY then...the real Muslim spring will happen....and I wish it happens in my lifetime....

The Shakuhachi is an ancient flute that captivates many who cross its path. Hidden in its simplicity is profound possibility. The windy, resonant sound of the Shakuhachi brings deep serenity to sympathetic ears. For the devoted player, it is also a spiritual tool for training the mind and breath.

Most notably, Zen monks have using the Shakuhachi for centuries to train mind and breath through the practice of Sui Zen (blowing Zen) using Buddhist music composed specifically for the Shakuhachi.

Blowing Zen: Expanded Edition is two books in one. The first is the original Blowing Zen (1992) which guides you step-by-step from producing sound to playing Buddhist Meditation music. Also included are detailed build-your-own shakuhachi instructions. The 'Expanded" section is Blowing Zen II, which contains sheet music for an additional 26 Hon Kyoku compositions (Zen Buddhist music), pitch graphs, more San Kyoku (Japanese Chamber music), and more Japanese folk music.

The Blowing Zen Companion CD (sold separately) contains the Japanese folk tunes, chamber music and Buddhist composition “Hi Fu Mi” taught in the first section of the book. It also includes examples of timing and standard Buddhist music phrases.

Excellence
By chas. monaghan
If you're serious about learning the notation and want an in depth guide (whether you have a teacher or not), then this and the companion cd are the best money you can spend other than on a good flute.

Great book for beginners.
By shoeboy
This is the simplest and easiest to understand of all the beginners books. It goes straight to the Japanese notation and explains it as you go. The cd or tape that goes with it makes life even easier. If you're starting out even without a teacher this is THE book.

Hard to follow without CD
By Jim Passantino
Very hard to follow without the CD which costs more than the book and must be ordered separately. He could have charged us a little more and included it. I did not find the Asian music notation easy to follow so I transposed some of the songs to a more standard understandable notation. I did find a few hints but after misplacing the book I never looked for it again. Also, too many pages wasted on making your own shakuhachi. Maybe if I wanted to make one I would have appreciated it a little more. Not useless but not very good for a beginner like me.

The Depth of the Human Person: A Multidisciplinary ApproachFrom Welker, Michael (EDT)

This volume brings together leading theologians, biblical scholars, scientists, philosophers, ethicists, and others to explore the multidimensionality and depth of the human person. Moving away from dualistic (mind-body, spirit-flesh, naturalmental) anthropologies, the book's contributors examine human personhood in terms of a complex flesh-body-mind-heart-soul-conscience-reason-spirit spectrum.

The Depth of the Human Person begins with a provocative essay on the question "Why is personhood conceptually difficult?" It then rises to the challenge of relating theological contributions on the subject to various scientific explorations. Finally, the book turns to contemporary theological-ethical challenges, discussing such subjects as human dignity, embodiment, gender stereotypes, and human personhood at the edges of life.
