NOT a JOY RIDE....
By Tally Haugen
Above my desk in my house hang two photographs in matching frames, one pictures the great Spencer Tracy in 1935, signed, and the other is a signed photograph of Katharine Hepburn, signed, pictured as "Rosie", from THE AFRICAN QUEEN.I bought these originally, not only because I'm a Classic Movie Devotee, not only because I am a "Romantic" who believed in their 26-year love story, but because these were 2 STRONG people, regardless of their assorted faults separately and in dealing with each other.Surely that is not unlike most long-standing "marriages", and although they never married, they didn't NEED to, they achieved that BOND, unbreakable, despite distance, despite drink, despite personal loss, with a huge RESPECT and REGARD for one another. I don't believe any journalist can PRESUME to "hold the true story" of what transpired between them, certainly the News Hens of Hollywood left them pretty much ALONE during their heyday.Hepburn left movies for 5 Years to nurse him, before they made GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER in 1967.Only Idiots didn't know WHY..
Yet in William Mann's 500-page volume KATE, their relationship, and her later recollections of it, are picked apart as if she was a dottering old fool, when she was still remarkably bright and cogent in her memories. She did NOT leave him in the 1950s, she was away, he was away, he leaned on drink, she was at his side again, etc etc..The REAL STORY of their Life together should be left much as the press left it those many years ago...ALONE !ONLY THEY knew what happened, and it was THEIR BUSINESS, PERIOD! I've no doubt THAT Kate knows FINALLY what he really thought of her, and it brings a smile. Why accuse her of "fantasizing" her happiness w/him in those long-ago days? She had a RIGHT to love him, to love her friends, to grow old, and to be RESPECTED in these processes. Mann quotes many of her "old friends" as negating the myth of their relationship..I for one resented this..Also detailing in horrific detail her relationships with women friends and his affairs, etc etc...DON'T NEED to see her bones picked apart these 10 years+after her death..
Tracy & Hepburn, together and separately belonged to a GOLDEN, LOVELY age of movies..They had TALENT and said lines that even today still bring tears to the eye, even if you've seen BOYS TOWN, or SUMMERTIME, for instance, MANY times..Their STYLE and TALENT, the "Baked Potato" method of Tracy and the lovely red-headed, athletic Hepburn, remain "Classics" that were born to LAST!
I am one of those old-fashioned people who still believe in HEROES and HEROINES "Like Kate said in THE AFRICAN QUEEN": "Fancy ME a Heroine!"..but she WAS and always will be. She was also STRONG, and as was said "She not only taught us HOW TO LIVE", but also in the end "TAUGHT US HOW TO DIE"...I honor and respect her..If you feel as I do, SAVE YOUR MONEY, and let THIS one ALONE!....
