I like this book!...interesting, almost amusing. It is a scholarly work, good popular scholarship, written by a Jewish scholar written for the non-specialist and addressed to ordinary readers.

The author writes in his preface: Humbled before the incredible achievements of the psalmists, I can only modestly offer this commentary and guide to enjoying the Psalms as literature. If I hereby introduce any to this challenging and edifying literature or add new insights for others, my reward will be complete. In my opinion, the author succeeds very well. --Society of Biblical Literature, 2015

About the Author
Rabbi Benjamin J. Segal is an author and lecturer living in Jerusalem. He is a past president of the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies the academic and educational center of Masorti Judaism in Israel and Melitz, the Center for Jewish and Zionist Education. Earlier in his career he served as the director of the Ramah Programs in Israel. His translation and commentary, The Song of Songs: A Woman in Love, was published in 2009. He has also authored Returning: The Land of Israel as Focus in Jewish History (revised 2005), several study texts, and numerous articles on Bible, Jewish Thought, Education, and Zionism. He has taught in various educational and academic venues in Israel and North America. He was at one time chairperson of the Masorti movement in Israel and a member of the Executive of the World Zionist Organization. He is presently chairperson of the Directorate of the Meimad (political) party in Israel and serves on the boards and steering committees of several nonprofit educational organizations. Rabbi Segal was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1969 and served as a pulpit rabbi in Palo Alto, California. He moved to Israel in 1973 and lives in Jerusalem with his wife Judy. The Segals have five children and fifteen grandchildren.

Insightful commentary on 'Tehillim'

If someone were to ask if we need yet another reading, or re-reading of Tehillim (The Psalms) I would say 'Of course if it adds to our understanding'. And this rereading by Benjamin Segal does this by combining a great deal of scholarly information with his own interpretations. He is not at all dogmatic but often suggests various interpretations leaving it to the reader to choose between them.
He focuses on literary aspects of the Psalms and in so doing reveals layers of complexity I would never have guessed in my own simple straightforward reading. I believe that all who feel close to the Psalms will gain from studying and reading this work.

I bought this book in Kindle edition and it has been somewhat useful. Not my favorite psalm commentary, but its viewpoint, literary angle, is interesting and fresh.

Giving a Voice to the Dead

Over the last two centuries, peat cutters in Northern Europe have been uncovering bodies that are in such good condition that it was first thought that the people found were the victims of recent crimes. Actually, the bodies were preserved by natural bog processes. Radioactive carbon dating has shown that the bodies are two thousand years old. In this work, the bog bodies are explained in all of their sometimes gruesome details. The book is illustrated with many photos.

The bog bodies were immediately seen to be murder victims, but who were they and why were they killed? The author, Miranda Aldhouse-Green, who is an archaeologist, presents us with the facts surrounding the bodies. Modern forensic techniques have revealed how the people lived, what they ate over their lives, what they ate in the days before their deaths, and how they were killed. We learn that they were not the victims of common crime, but were deliberately put to death.

The author presents some interesting theories and conclusions about the deaths. This book dispels any thoughts that I may have had about ideal pre-industrial society. However, as civilized as today’s Northern European descendents may seem, I am not sure about how far the world has progressed.

Worthwhile treatise

A strangely circular book in that the author constantly circles around the topics, touching on a topic then deferring it to later, then referring back to it. She may touch upon a subject in chapter one, but defer the full conversation about it to chapter 8, and then in chapter 8 refers back to chapter one. Part of the issue is that in reality, it's not possible to solve "Europe's Ancient Mystery" as the title optimistically proclaims since there's simply not enough evidence from that time period to do more than provide some educated guesses. But Aldhouse-Green provides some fine educated guesses, focusing on a variety of topics to help provide context and insight into the mystery of why these bog bodies were often brutally murdered and buried in a bog to preserve them. From examining why the bog preserves bodies to considering their last meals, the author covers a lot of ground in this book. At times topics feel a bit repetitive because of her focus on nuances and her willingness to circle back to topics, but she does just enough to persuade the reader to persist to the end of this book.

Excellent book for one who is obsessed with Bog Bodies (like I am). I love the information about the Iron Age. This book really brings to life the cultural setting in which the big bodies lived and died.

Penzler's second massive anthology for Black Lizard (following 2007's The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps) collects an astoundingly thorough and enjoyable set of 86 vampire tales, poems and true stories. Classics such as Le Fanu's Carmilla, Poe's Ligeia and Stoker's Dracula's Guest are nicely interspersed with lesser-known older and newer works. Fredric Brown's Blood, an old-school sci-fi short-short, is a hoot, and D.H. Lawrence's The Lovely Lady is a witty satire that in many ways harks back to Polidori's The Vampyre. Other standouts include Lisa Tuttle's The Replacements, a gothic feminist tale, and Gardner Dozois and Jack Dann's Down Among the Dead Men, a chilling story set in a Nazi concentration camp. Adult/High School—This collection of more than 80 tales and poems has been meticulously compiled for rabid vampire-lit fans to sample and enjoy. The book is divided into 13 distinct sections. Stories predating Dracula include Edgar Allan Poe's "Ligeia" and Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla." "Classic Tales" features Bram Stoker's "Dracula's Guest," published posthumously and edited from the final draft of Dracula. Unexpectedly included is D. H. Lawrence's "The Lovely Lady," under the heading "Psychic Vampires." Penzler offers up some newer tales with Anne Rice's intriguing "The Master of Rampling Gate," Stephen King's humorous "Popsy," Ray Bradbury's creepy "The Man Upstairs," and Gahan Wilson's chilling "The Sea Was Wet as Wet Can Be." Penzler has also selected works of lesser-known authors but just as varied and pleasurable for horror aficionados. Also not to be missed are the interesting and entertaining extras: the preface by Neil Gaiman, the foreword by Kim Newman, the introduction by Penzler, and the outstanding extensive vampire bibliography compiled by Daniel Seitler. He is a recipient of an Edgar Award for The Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection and the Ellery Queen Award by the Mystery Writers of America for his many contributions to the field. THE Vampire Fiction Collection To Own

I can't say with any degree of certainty that this is indeed "the most complete volume of vampire tales published" but at over 1000 pages and 80 plus stories it must come awfully close. It does contain the most notable works for sure ('Carmilla', 'Dracula's Guest', 'Mrs. Amworth') but there are a few that are conspicuous in their absence ('The Vourdalak' by Tolstoy, 'The Unicorn Tapestry' by Suzy McKee Charnas or 'The Night Flier' by Stephen King). However, while many of the most anthologized tales are here there are many others I am not familiar with and seldom see in collections of this kind: M.R. James' 'Wailing Well', Charles Beaumont's 'Place of Meeting', or Roger Zelazny's 'Dayblood' just to name a mere few. The stories range over a wide spectrum of the vampire genre and you will find traditional Gothic horror tales, romantic vampires, humorous vampire stories as well as supposed 'true' vampire tales and even a few that stretch the definition of 'vampire' from the normal accepted sense of the word. As to be expected of an anthology of this size the quality of the stories vary (with personal taste playing a big role here) from undisputed classics to the just mediocre but you would be hard pressed to find an out and out clunker in the lot. For me, one of the biggest selling points is the extensive bibliography of vampire stories and novels that editor Otto Penzler has assembled: over 100 pages of material that may not be completely exhaustive but is certainly going to be of use to a lot of folks be they academics or just a casual reader who wants to know what else is out there in the way of vampire fiction.

Bottom line: if you do not already own a good vampire anthology (and maybe even if you do) you would be hard pressed to find a better selection and range of vampiric short fiction than the one Penzler has assembled here. Plus, the inclusion of a massive bibliography makes this an irresistible inclusion in your vampire library.

It is big but has problems

The Vampire Archives nearly has every short vampire story but is missing a few significant titles. It does not have John Polidori's, "The Vampire," nor does it have Alexis Tolstoy's, "The Vampires."
But it has a lot of very good titles and nice little bios of the authors and a bibliography big enough to choke the undead. Several people have noted that it is printed on cheap pulp paper but the Amazon price makes it worth buying.
If you want what is probably the broadest and most complete vampire short story/novelette book you ought to get this book.

Paper and binding could be better, but this is an excellent compilation

Every fall, I revisit horror classics in film and in books and when I saw "The Vampire Archives", I just knew I had to have it. The contents are amazing in the breadth of vampire stories and at 1034 pages, this is one heavy tome. The biggest flaw in this publication is in the abysmal binding and paper quality. The paper is flimsy and as careful as I am with all my books, I don't see how this book is going to hold up over repeated use. The cover is flimsy too and as much as I love the cover art (reminds me of those classic Hammer horror flicks), I think the publishers could have done so much better. Perhaps in the future, this could be re-issued as a two volume edition in hardcover and with better quality paper. That would be ideal.

OK, ranting aside, the contents are impressive. As some reviewers have noted, there are some significant omissions, notably John Polidori's "The Vampyre" (though it merits a mention in the bibliography at the back of the book). Here's a listing of all the stories contained in this tome:

About the Author
Barbara E. Walvoord is professor emerita at the University of Notre Dame. For more than thirty years she has been leading faculty workshops across the country on the topics of grading, assessment, teaching, learning, and writing across the curriculum. She is the author of Assessment Clear and Simple from Jossey-Bass.

Virginia Johnson Anderson is professor of biology at Towson University. In her published works, numerous workshops, and consulting with the National Science Foundation Urban Science Initiatives, she addresses teaching, learning, and assessment in the sciences.

My Top Book for Evaluating Learning

Walvoord is amazing. Like her second edition of Assessment Clear and Simple (which came out SHORTER in the revision--even more clear and simple!) this book is just the most useful resource for getting to the basics and essentials of evaluating learning in any setting. Besides helpful rubrics and timesaving tips, it's got a variety of styles and approaches to overall course grading systems. My top recommendation on grading, in my work in faculty development.

P.S. I saw Walvoord present at NEFDC in 2007 and she facilitated that workshop quite well too. It included rubrics for assessing classroom participation, which I've since used.

Fun, lovable read!

Let me just start by saying I appreciate that the author was kind enough to point out what could have been a flaw in her story, or at least a point for people to complain about. Right up front, she tells you that the way things happen in the book is not normal, but were sped up for the sake of the story. I like that s***. So I have literally no reason to complain about how unrealistic certain things are, since she warned me and I chose to continue. Thanks for keeping it real, Ella.

The characters were pretty great. Olive and Jason and Olives BFF Lucy... they were all just great. I love the solid friendship that Olive and Lucy had, and I love Lucy's need for comfy boobs to rest on. Jason was on the verge of perfect, without being that completely overbearing jealous guy that I find so often in these types of books. While a bit of mutual jealousy is fine, it is just so often over the top in books lately! There is a limit where it stops being attractive, and he did not exceed that.

This book, like many others, is not perfect. But I laughed, I cried a smidgen, and I definitely inhaled this in one sitting. It was so easy to get into and I just couldn't stop. To love Jason Thorn will give all kinds of lovely feels. It put a huge smile on my face.

My reason for going with 4.5 stars instead of 5 is just because:
1) Sometimes I get tired of a nickname for someone being repeated so. many. times.

and....

2) At some point, dirty talk during sex starts to feel like a cheese fest for me. Not that this book wasn't steamy and sexy, I just get easily cheesed out by these things sometimes. Plenty of people will enjoy every word of it. It is just a personal thing for me!!

I DEFINITELY plan to read the next book, and the short books from within this book (I love that the author did that, by the way!).

Jason Thorn is everything I look for in a book boyfriend. He's a perfect combination mixed together in one devastatingly handsome package. He's equal parts, arrogant and cocky, sweet and caring.

"I kissed the edges of her mouth where she hid those secret smiles, the ones she saved for when she was writing on her laptop, lost in a different world she was creating from the start, brick by brick. I wanted to own those secret smiles just as much I wanted to own her beautiful heart. I wanted to be the reason for their existence"

Olive Taylor is everything I look for in a heroine. Sweet, adorable and a wee bit dorky. She's totally relatable which makes her perfect for this genre.

"When I lifted my head up, he was staring down at me-right into my eyes. By then I was the perfect example of one of those 'My body is ready' Gifs."

To Love Jason Thorn is everything I look for in a favourite book. A perfect combination of the bad boy vs the good girl. I absolutely adored this book, it ticked all the right boxes for me.

"Then my lips were on hers, and her lips were on mine. We kissed long enough to cover years. In front of everyone, her lips became mine and I took her breath for myself, because I needed it more then she did."

The storyline was a wee bit of famous actor thrown in with my favourite type of Romance, the heroine and the brothers best friend. I've discovered that a lot of my favourite books seem to be this genre and it's because it always works.

"My heart ached with love for a little girl who in some ways had always belonged to me"

Olive grew up idolising her big brothers best friend, Jason, she's been in love with him since she was 7 years old. But Jason broke her heart twice and now lives a separate life to the Taylor family. A chance encounter at a movie executives office changes Olive and Jason's lives completely. A love that burned for so long grows brighter and a love that was completely platonic grows into so much more. This story follows Olive and Jason through a friendship that develops into friends with marriage and then so much more. I adored the way this story was written and I loved the pet names that Jason gave Olive, I highlighted a huge portion of this book, the steamy quotes, the love quotes and the downright hilarious quotes.

"That thing that resides in your chest? Took wings and flew away. The other thing that was in my skull? Turned to complete mush."

Ella Maise creates characters and a storyline that develop all on there own. The development of the story was smooth and flowed perfectly from chapter to chapter. The secondary characters were certainly a treat to read about as well. Everyone's needs a friend like Lucy!

"If it happens, don't freak out, Olive. You're a calm waterfall, a purring cat."

I would recommend this to anyone who dreams of one day marrying Zac Efron or who adores the friends to lovers genre. A great read with a whole lot of humour.

"She was seeing me, and maybe for the first time, I was seeing her too. Her voice called to me as much as her eyes did, but then she hid those beautiful eyes from me, and I found myself crossing the room to get to her."

I am always a little skeptical the first time I read a book by a new author but this one passed with flying colors. I loved the characters, the plot line and the banter between all the characters was great. I found myself laughing out loud a few times.

Olive has been in love with Jason since she met him when she was 8. They basically spend the next 8 years growing up in the same house until tragedy strikes and Jason has to move away. Right before he moves away though he unknowingly breaks her heart.

Fast forward 15ish (can't remember the exact amount) years and all the sudden their paths cross again in the most unexpected of ways

Jason is now a leading actor in Hollywood who can't stop making bad choices. Olive is the innocent author with a book being made into a movie. In order to improve his image his publicist is trying to convince him to get married. (Love isn't a requirement in Hollywood apparently) After looking at what feels like a million head shots the lightbulb goes off and everyone agrees Jason doesn't need a fake actress wife...he needs Olive. With their background no one would question their fast love affair.

But what happens when lines blur and real feelings are involved? And what happens when a jealous friend starts causing trouble in the most serious of ways.

Great book, had my attention the whole time. Worth reading and I have already bought the second book in the series because Lucy is hysterical!!!
