The “The Trial of Phillis Wheatley” selected as winner in eLit awards for 2015 for drama. “The Trial of Phillis Wheatley” By Ronald Wheatley In a preface to the book “Phillis Wheatley and Her Poetry,” Professor Henry Louis Gates asked of an assemblage of distinguished men who gathered at the Governor’s Council Chamber room in the Old State House (“Common House”) in Boston in the fall of 1772: “Why had this august group been assembled? Why had it seen fit to summon this young African girl, scarcely eighteen years old, before it?” This group of ‘the most respectable Characters in Boston,’ as it would later define itself, had assembled to question closely the African adolescent on the slender sheaf of poems that she claimed to have ‘written by herself.’” This young “African girl” was Phillis Wheatley. “The Trial of Phillis Wheatley” is a courtroom drama because it “depicts” what happened in the Governor’s Council Chamber room that day. However, as important as she is to our history and to the drama, the play is not just about Phillis. The play is also about the men in that room and the test that they were facing. The test of overcoming their own prejudices to be willing to put their signature on a document attesting that this African household slave of John and Susannah Wheatley had written a number of poems compiled in a small manuscript. A Negro slave author was a phenomenon that was unique to these men, to Boston, and to a young America. Only if the largely older and all white men in that room were willing to put their names to this attestation would this manuscript have a chance of being published. The consequences of this action for these men were possible ridicule, and the threat of physical violence from an external force, the Boston gang, under the leadership of Ebenezer Mackintosh, street brawler and charismatic leader of the South End Gang. The final verdict would change American History.

About the Author
Ronald Wheatley is the author of the award winning historical novel "A Song of Africa," that was inspired by his experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nigeria, West Africa. He is an attorney and student of history and a member of the Massachusetts Sons of the American Revolution. He served in Vietnam with the US Army's 1st Signal Brigade, 1967-1968.

New View on Life

I am 21 years old, and I was never a reader. All throughout high school I refused to read books for pleasure, I even refused to read the mandatory reading assignments. Also, I never made it past my first semester of college. However, I recently picked this book up out of curiosity. This book has totally changed my view on literature and value of education. Instead of coming home after work and sitting down and watching movie after movie, my new desire is to read a good book. Thankfully, "The Trial of Phillis Wheatley", has turned that routine around for me. Now, I want to read more often than watch television, I now want to read more to further my knowledge on subjects like history. I recommend this book to everyone, readers or not. Thank You Ronald Wheatley for this beautiful piece of art.

Must read historical book

The story of Phyllis Wheatley is presented by the author in a theatrical manner that made me feel as though I was actually present when Phyllis was challenged to prove the authorship of her poems because of her race. I became totally immersed in the issues of the times experiencing the tension of blacks verses whites, England verses America and the Colonial debates over British rule, abolition and taxation. Remarkably the Wheatley family did not treat Phyllis as a slave rather, they recognized and nurtured her talent and provided unprecedented education in literature. Without their generosity of spirit and the support of one of our Founding Fathers, John Hancock, America would not have been gifted with talents of our country’s first published black poet. I heartily recommend this book. The story was riveting, the writing artful, and the reader was left desiring more. Thank you for writing this wonderful book!

An Amazing Woman

Ronald Wheatley takes readers back before the American Revolution to introduce us to a young woman slave, who is both genius and poet. I had not heard of her and was so pleased to read about the first published African American woman poet. Through his characters, Wheatley's book expresses both British as well as American viewpoints and his writing reveals the delicate, worried emotions of the soft spoken slave. The author gives lots of data about those turbulent times before the play begins.

A cue may not seem like rocket science but there are a lot of factors ...

Sound familiar? If you've been involved in weightlifting or even CrossFit for any amount of time it's safe to say you've heard these cues. Anyone can spit them out at an athlete. A cue may not seem like rocket science but there are a lot of factors that go into why a coach is saying it, when he is saying it, and how it is being said so that the athlete can benefit the most from it.

What Makes This Worth Buying?

No one is better at cueing athletes than Danny Camargo. The 24 year USAW veteran and CrossFit coach’s first and Catalyst Athletics’ most recent published volume Cues & Corrections brings the lost art form of cueing to the masses in one concise manual. It’s unique in that it introduces progressions but focuses almost exclusively on cues and corrections for each individual lift. It bridges the gap left by a majority of weightlifting coaching manuals in that it gives the reader practical knowledge and allows them to implement what they’ve learned immediately.

But make no mistake: Cues & Corrections is not just a cut and dry rehash of things you have read before. You may have seen progressions or heard of some of the cues or corrections because it's hard to reinvent the wheel on movements that have been around longer than you've been alive. However Camargo brings a fresh perspective on how to teach the lifts and get cues across to athlete's by sprinkling in his own war stories and anecdotes that help coaches relate to their athletes. As an American record holding weightlifter, international weightlifting coach, and CrossFit affiliate owner and Regionals coach, Camargo has plenty of experiences with athletes of all abilities to share with the reader.

Progressions

The reader is first introduced to Camargo’s Progression series for the snatch, clean and jerk. By separating the lifts into their own section he is able to deliver progressions in a concise and comprehensive format anyone can grasp. In doing so Camargo allows the reader to properly comprehend and soak up each movement on their own without being rushed through the volume. This seemingly trivial separation is critical because it makes referencing back to the manual easier. For example while some of the snatch and clean errors and cues may be similar, each is given their own section with just as much as detail as the other (along with nuisances).

The movements are technical but Camargo easily explains them in a way that only a life-long veteran of the sport could. His description of the mid hang power snatch rivals any other explanation and progression I have seen to date.

Cues & Corrections

Unlike other books which stop at progressions, Camargo takes his volume one step further. He arms his readers with detailed corrective exercises and cues but also tells the reader why these exercises and cues are being used. He informs coaches about potential structural imbalances and fixes. It’s refreshing that Camargo doesn't BS his reader; some errors are caused by more than one issue and he doesn't shy away from that . The book helps coaches understand that, spot multiple errors at once, and utilize a singular cue that will fix all the errors at once (and in due time). Some of the most helpful portions of the Correction section were those errors that very rarely get addressed in detail publicly: athletes on their toes during the dip and drive, bars crashing during a clean, missing lifts behind, and the infamous donkey kicking so many new athletes love to the do. For me one of the most useful sections in the entire book was the in depth analysis of the split jerk, something you don't see separated often, and creating cues from things your own athletes say.

Technology & Visuals

While Camargo has a knack for easily conveying complex movements through text he doesn't forget that our craft is visual. Throughout the book there are photographs and comparisons of progressions as well as errors. Many sections have side by side comparisons of errors and corrections so coaches can easily spot the deficiency. One of the most memorable parts of the book was Camargo’s photographic illustration of the nuisanced differences in the clean rack position and jerk rack position; to date I have yet to see a better comparison that gets the point across. It's the subtle differences that make or break an effective coach.

Camargo embraces technology by linking YouTube video clips into his volume so people can see not only how the progressions work but how fast the drills and transitions he recommends are to be performed. It’s easy to picture how fast an athlete should move out of the hole in a squat drill meant for speed but it’s not as easy to picture the speed from a press. Without the video accompanying the text, some coaches may not be able to implement the drills and corrections properly. Like the book, the videos are short enough for a coach to watch quickly but long enough to get the point of the movement across; this makes it easy for a coach to relay the information back to his athlete. Don’t worry the YouTube links are easily accessible from the hard copy and directly linked in the e-book version.

Adaptability

What's even better about this volume is that it is adaptable to the coach. While Camargo offers suggestions and cues he finds best, he makes sure to note that some of the best coaching cues are the ones that come from the mouth of your own athletes. The cues Camargo lists do work: I’ve seen him use them in competition and sure enough, his athletes perform well and make lifts they may have just missed by listening to one of his precise cues. But you can tell it's because they have spent time together and he knows his athletes very well.

Cues & Corrections is not a magic cure for poor movement because it takes a coach’s eye and communication skills to fix them. However the book does a tremendous job in arming coaches with the proper tools to spot and correct athletes’ errors; in doing so Camargo is helping shape the futures of up and coming weightlifting coaches.

With the CrossFit influx of coaches this volume couldn't come at a better time. These Beginner and Intermediate coaches who may not have been exposed to the Olympic lifts before, or at least not in detail, now have a resource that cuts out all of the fluff and long winded explanations so that they can get quickly get their athletes moving better. With a quick flip of the page they can assess an athlete’s flaw and verbally communicate the fix as quick and efficiently as possible. I benefited from the manual so much so that I’ve already implemented some of the corrections and cues into my own coaching arsenal and have informed my assistant coaching staff to do the same.

Outstanding tool for Olympic weightlifters and coaches

Camargo's book is extremely useful for Olympic weightlifters and coaches at all levels. The information is presented in a very straightforward way that makes it easy to follow. Because of his experience level in weightlifting, readers can be assured that the guidance they're getting is the real deal. Internet phonies are everywhere these days, attempting to teach the OLifts to people despite their complete lack of expertise and background. Danny is a real weightlifter (and coach), so his book delivers the right kind of input to readers. I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to strengthen their skills and knowledge base.

Short, minimalist, disappointing

I was disappointed with this book. First, the book is very short. It's the size of a fiction paperback. The content begins on page 17 and ends on 106. There are 1-2 blank pages between each section, so the total content is no more than 80 pages.

Pages 17-48 are simplified progressions for the Snatch, Clean, and Jerk. Each position only has two paragraphs of basic explanations.

Pages 51-98 are Cues and Corrections. Each error has a one paragraph description, followed by a bullet point list of verbal cues which are often very simple: "Control", "Finish", "Stay Tall", "Jump Longer". There are no tactile cues, which I was hoping for.

Following the list of verbal cues there is a bullet point list of corrections. This is a list of movement progressions, many of which are not included in this book. Several errors included a correction like "Any exercises that keep the hips and bar (or shoulders) moving at the same rate." This was not helpful.

I understand the Snatch and Clean have similar errors, but often the descriptive paragraph was copied verbatim between the two sections.

I really enjoyed Greg Everett's Olympic Weightlifting and I was hoping for a similar quality guide. Unfortunately there were only a couple points I picked up in Daniel Camargo's book that were not in Everett's Olympic Weightlifting.

Aww wow, this was such a lovely book to read.

It all begins with a flat tire and a handsome man rescuing the damsel lol. As Tabor and Dani begin to get to know each other some things are thrown in their way. Read the book to find out what happens with these two lovely characters and watch their story unfold. It's actually quite beautiful.

Tabor and Dani have such a cute relationship. Their whole storyline was wonderful. The characters were great. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to read an adorable YA book. This will keep you smiling.

About the Author
Del Sroufe's passion for cooking began at eight years old and never faded. In 1989 he went to work for one of Columbus’ premier vegetarian restaurants, the King Avenue Coffeehouse, where he honed his craft as a baker and chef. Sroufe opened Del’s Bread, a vegan bakery, before beginning vegan meal delivery service in 2001, serving eclectic plant-based cuisine to Columbus residents. During this time, he developed what became a very popular cooking class series, sharing many of the delicious recipes he had created over the years.

In 2006, Sroufe joined Wellness Forum Foods as co-owner and chef, where he continued the tradition of delivering great tasting, plant-based meals to clients in Columbus as well as throughout the continental U.S. Sroufe also joined The Wellness Forum as a member where, after a lifetime of yo-yo dieting, he has lost over 200 pounds on a low fat, plant-based diet. He continues to teach cooking classes at local venues like Whole Foods, Community Recreation Centers, and The Wellness Forum. Sroufe is the author of Forks Over Knives—The Cookbook, a vegan cookbook companion to the acclaimed documentary Forks Over Knives.

LeAnne Campbell, PhD, lives in Durham, North Carolina. She has been preparing meals based on a whole-food, plant-based diet for almost 20 years. Campbell has raised two sons—Steven and Nelson, now 18 and 17—on this diet. As a working mother, she has found ways to prepare quick and easy meals without using animal products or adding fat.

TL;DR Book is average. Great for meal planning plant-based beginners, not so great for the salt.

This book is pretty straight forward as long as you know what you're getting out of it. This is very much a beginner's guide to eating vegan/plant based meals. If you have a moderate amount of experience cooking this way already, you may find this book underwhelming.

Pros:
1. Simple recipes with many under 5-6 ingredients which is exactly what I wanted to make tracking meals/calories online super easy. However, some recipes do involve using ingredients from other recipes like dressings and sauces. It's important to read ahead and see all the ingredients you need before diving into a recipe.
2. 3 meal plans are presented which gets you accustomed to the concept of reusing key ingredients in several recipes throughout the week. This makes shopping easier, cheaper, and creates less food waste at the end of the week.
3. I love that most recipes don't use tofu/tempeh/mock meats. As much as I love tofu, it's much simpler to make the veggies and beans stand out on their own. I think this also makes it much easier for beginners to delve into a plant based diet while recreating flavors they may miss from an omnivorous diet.

Cons:
1. As helpful as the meal plans are, they do seem a bit hastily put together. I am starting the first meal plan tomorrow, and I realized when I was putting together the shopping list that many of the additional ingredients listed were actually the ones needed for the recipes for that week. If I had purchased the ingredients in the additional list and from the recipes, I would have doubled many of them! The list should be edited to consolidate everything needed in one list.
2. Speaking of the meal plans, since there are only 3 plans, that clearly doesn't cover using every recipe in the book. Additional plans to incorporate each of the recipes would really make this book stand out as a great meal planning guide.
3. The pantry list isn't beginner friendly. Many people starting may not know that nutritional yeast is a great stand in for cheese, or that arrow root powder works as a thickener. Tips included with WHY the ingredients should be a staple would not be amiss.
4. It would be great if the recipes included nutritional information!
5. No savory breakfast recipes. What gives?

The food:
As mentioned above, I started out with the recipes from meal plan 1 and have made most of them already. The falafel, tomato corn and fresh basil soup, apple pie granola, and basil pesto hummus are delicious and were quick to put together. However, after my experience with the seasoning for the basil pesto hummus and green sauce, I am very cautious about the amount of salt the author recommends.

Let me just preface my recipe review with the fact that I find it annoying when people change key ingredients in a recipe and then proceed to complain how it turned out terrible. With that said, oh my good sweet baby Jesus I think the author may either have an issue with typos, or just wants sauces to taste like licking a block of salt. When I made the basil pesto hummus, I measured exactly 1 teaspoon of sea salt as recommended. To be fair, the recipe does say "more or less to taste", but my taste is definitely less salt. I know vegan food gets the nasty "bland/no flavor" stereotype, but it doesn't need that much salt! Thankfully, that was salvageable unlike the green sauce. After my experience with the hummus, I was skeptical of using 2 teaspoons of sea salt for 1 3/4 cups of sauce, but I went with it. Dear mother of god was that a mistake. It was absolutely wretched. The salt completely overpowered all the wonderful fresh cilantro and well, pretty much everything else. I threw it out and made a new batch using just 1/2 teaspoon and added half a cucumber to add some freshness/sweetness to it. It was IMMENSELY better. I will now be extremely cautious of the seasoning measurements in all the recipes now! I may come back and edit my review once I get through trying more recipes from the book.

All in all, the book is solidly average. If you are a beginner and want a cookbook that gives you tips, has a great starter pantry list, and really gives you great recipes you'll want to share with everyone, I highly recommend the Thug Kitchen series.

wide spectrum of flavor exploration plus a good index

I have recently transitioned to eating a plant-based diet which necessitates learning new ways to cook and think about flavor pairings. I went to the library and checked out about a dozen vegan cookbooks and then bought those with the most interesting recipes. This cookbook has risen to the top of my list for several reasons.

First of all, I do the majority of my shopping at a farmer's market so I come home with quantities of seasonal vegetables and then figure out what to make with them - kind of the opposite of the prescribed menu plans at the beginning of this cookbook but it works well either way. When I get home from the market I look in the indexes of my cookbooks and flag recipes containing the specific vegetables I brought home. Of the four cookbooks I use most, this one has the most thorough and usable index. One of the other cookbooks only indexes ingredients that are named in the recipe title or the introductory paragraph, not the actual recipe ingredients! Really. Since I don't read cookbooks like novels, that book doesn't get used much, but this one does!

The second reason I love this cookbook is because it covers a wide spectrum of flavor exploration without requiring spices I've never heard of. Most of the interesting flavors come from imaginative pairings of herbs and vegetables. I can't tolerate (digest) more than a whisper of anything from the allium family (onion, garlic, shallots, etc.) and many cookbooks rely almost exclusively on loading up their unimaginative recipes with nothing but onions and garlic for flavoring. To be sure, there are plenty of recipes in this cookbook that call for onions and garlic but most of them include other primary flavorings so the dish still tastes great when I just leave out the allium.

Other positives: the cookbook is printed on a sturdy coated paper stock and also includes photos for about three quarters of the recipes. Pictures really help me to understand a recipe before I even read the ingredient list.

I have had vegan cook books before but most of the recipes involved foods I never heard of and can't find anywhere but the internet. The recipes in this book are straight forward mostly easy to make recipes I actually want to eat.
