Super introduction to etiquette and behavior
By AJB
Practical and explicit book for boys and young men to study how to be gentlemen. It explains not only why a behavior is appropriate, but why another behavior is inappropriate and harmful to others or yourself. A must read for all parents of boys in the increasingly asocial world of texting, youtubing, emailing, and facebooking.

Love This Book
By Steven F. Deaton
We purchased this book to go through with our 10-year-old son & I ended up liking it for me.

In a time when manners and respect are nearly gone, this book helps inform a young man (or not-so-young-man) on how to conduct himself as a gentleman.

This book is an easy read and covers a wide-range of subjects & situations. It does it with a bit of humor too!

Would highly recommend this to any parent with a boy.

Good book
By M. Beals
I gave this book to my 14 year old grandson when he graduated from 8th grade. Whenever he seems to lose his manners, I have him read a specific chapter. Things like how to say thank you. I even bought one to keep in our house so that when the grandkids visit they can read a chapter and we can discuss why manners are so important.

Good Introductory Tome, but Not for the Seasoned Pro
By John Z
I am not the target audience of this book but I was sent the book to review for Wiley. The intro asks if you really need a six-pound book on Swing. That is one of the books I've written, where I basically did a brain dump on all there was to Swing at the time. What this 900-plus page book provides instead is a quick introduction on a variety of topics to help you get started with many of the different Java technologies that are out there. There are nine mini-books built into this single book. In the early days of Java books, where books over 1,000 pages were common, the mini-books would be called sections, especially since there is a single author for the whole book, not separate ones for each minibook.

The nine sections mentioned on the cover are as follows:

* Java Basics
* Programming Basics
* Object-Oriented Programming,
* Strings, Arrays, and Collections
* Programming Techniques
* Swing
* Web Programming
* Files and Databases
* Fun, Games, and Mobile

I view the target audience of the book as someone familiar with the basics of programming, just not in Java. It does cover Java 8, which is great, though perhaps there could have been more Java 8 specific discussions. The place where Java 8 is most evident is the Date and Time chapter. The lambda/closure discussion is pretty much limited to a ten page chapter though, and a handful of pages elsewhere.

The first three minibooks make up a decent introductory text to Java programming. Depending upon your level of familiarity with programming, some of it may be review.

The next two minibooks are what I view as the core material of the book. It is pretty much the key parts you'll need to know about to work with Java, especially the Collections and Threading parts.

The Swing section I almost view as throwaway, and I say that as someone who has done lots of Swing programming. Unless you are doing maintenance programming, you're more than likely not going to be needing the material.

The Web programming minibook has its highs and lows. The first chapter is on Applets. Nobody uses them any more. Due to security issues in browsers, Java in the browser from the public web is practically dead. On the other hand, the servlets and JSP material is enough to wet your appetite, but you'll really need one of those tome-type books if you want to do anything more with it. You'll know enough to get in trouble but not really enough to get past a job interview, beyond the basics.

The last two sections are good, but your need for the material depends on what you plan on doing with Java. Most people will need to know about working with Java streams. You'll probably need to work with databases and XML, too. How much you'll need to work with drawing and animation, though, really depends on the job/task at hand. After reading the minibook, you'll probably be able to create a decent slot machine, but the "mobile" referenced on the cover is not there.

Overall, the book has its high and low points. If you're transitioning to Java from another language (or just getting started programming), the book will help you get your feet wet and get a good jump into the Java platform. If, however, you're the "seasoned pro" mentioned in the introduction, there probably isn't enough here to keep your interest or get you up to speed on what's new with Java 8.

Don't miss the extra material online. You don't even need to buy the book to read that. It includes some extra chapters, challenges, and cheat sheets.

and I have been very happy with the results
By Amazon Customer
I'm sorry, but this book should not be part of the Dummies series. I have used a lot of Dummies books to get started with various technologies or new topics, and I have been very happy with the results, but not this time. I'm sure that this book of books is an excellent reference for some people, but I have not found that to be the case for me. It does not provide enough integrated hands-on activity to really provide good understanding. It does not seem to connect the dots, And, it really tries to go too deep, too fast. By the time that I was into mini-book four, I just had to start skipping sections because they were not making sense. I tried using some of the snippets to create programs, and I could not get them to compile. I am going to give up on this book(s) and look for something that will work for me.

It's not very good, it did however, help me get a basic understanding of the Java language.

Farewell to Manzanar, by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, James D. Houston

During World War II a community called Manzanar was hastily created in the high mountain desert country of California, east of the Sierras. Its purpose was to house thousands of Japanese American internees. One of the first families to arrive was the Wakatsukis, who were ordered to leave their fishing business in Long Beach and take with them only the belongings they could carry. For Jeanne Wakatsuki, a seven-year-old child, Manzanar became a way of life in which she struggled and adapted, observed and grew. For her father it was essentially the end of his life.

At age thirty-seven, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston recalls life at Manzanar through the eyes of the child she was. She tells of her fear, confusion, and bewilderment as well as the dignity and great resourcefulness of people in oppressive and demeaning circumstances. Written with her husband, Jeanne delivers a powerful first-person account that reveals her search for the meaning of Manzanar.

Farewell to Manzanar has become a staple of curriculum in schools and on campuses across the country. Last year the San Francisco Chronicle named it one of the twentieth century’s 100 best nonfiction books from west of the Rockies.

Review

"A poignant memoir from a Japanese American. . . . Told without bitterness, her story reflects the triumph of the human spirit during an extraordinary episode in American history."
—Library Journal

"[Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston] describes vividly the life in the camp and the humiliations suffered by the detainees... A sober and moving personal account."
—Publishers Weekly

From the Publisher
Jeanne Wakatsuki was seven years old in 1942 when her family was uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar internment camp--with 10,000 other Japanese Americans. Along with searchlight towers and armed guards, Manzanar ludicrously featured cheerleaders, Boy Scouts, sock hops, baton twirling lessons and a dance band called The Jive Bombers who would play any popular song except the nation's #1 hit: "Don't Fence Me In."

Farewell To Manzanar is the true story of one spirited Japanese American family's attempt to survive the indignities of forced detention . . . and of a native-born American child who discovered what it was like to grow up behind barbed wire in the United States.

Insightful and Beautifully Written Memoir
By Jill Clardy
The WWII Japanese Internment camps represent a sad, embarrassing chapter in American history, which is probably why I never read about it during my time in school. Over 110,000 Japanese people were forcibly sent to 1 of 10 camps throughout the West. The majority of the internees were actually U.S. citizens, some 2nd or 3rd generation. The author was only 7 when her family was bused from Los Angeles to Manzanar in a remote corner of the Eastern Sierra between Mt. Whitney and Death Valley. The camp wasn't even completed yet when the first internees arrived. Families were assigned half of a flimsy barracks building with no walls for privacy. They ate communal meals and used communal toilets.

The climate was hostile, with heavy winds howling down off of the mountains kicking up dust constantly. The cold winter weather penetrated the thin tar-papered walls of the barracks buildings. In spite of the remote, hostile environment, the inhabitants worked to make their temporary home more comfortable, by decorating and building partitions. They cultivated vegetable gardens and harvested fruit from the orchards. Kids went to school; babies were conceived and born at the camp. In short, life went on. However, the camp life lead to an inevitable deterioration in the family structure. Meals were communal rather than family events, and parents had no way of providing for their families in the traditional method. Jeanne's father had a very difficult time in camp, and deteriorated into alcoholism. As she wrote in the book though her life started in camp, her father's life ended there. He never recovered his fishing business or his sense of self worth.

The book provides an insightful glimpse into the daily life in the camps as well as the emotional and economic toll extracted from the inhabitants. They lost their businesses, their homes, their way of life and their dignity. In a sad commentary on the personal havoc wreaked by the camps, the author noted that the last to leave were the elderly people; they had nothing to return to, and no energy or confidence to go back into their old communities and rebuild so they hung onto camp life until forced to leave.

I had the opportunity to visit the desolate, remote Manzanar camp in 2012. Only a couple of barracks are left, but there is an excellent visitor center that faithfully recreates what it must have been to live there. You can drive around the roads and see how large the camp was. The magnificent mountain range looms large on the horizon, with tantalizing beauty and freedom, which was denied to those inside the barbed wire fences.

Farewell to Manzanar is a beautifully written important memoir since there is so little written about that time. Pay no attention to the number of 1 and 2-star reviews. It appears that most of those are written by school age children who were forced to read the book and do a review, and probably didn't appreciate the cultural significance of the internment camps.

Compelling, Horrifying and Excellent Memoir
By bln
In the 1960s, when I was young, in California, no one Japanese would talk about this. We weren't taught about it. The one time I asked a close co-worker whether she knew about it, not realizing how rude that I was being, she declined to do more than to say the topic was a source of shame and embarrassment to her. I later learned that it was to many who were forced into "internment camps," really prisons. This excellent memoir goes far to share the complexities of having had to grow up under such circumstances and then figure out its impact on the author and her family. Gripping, a page-turner, and disturbing in its clear evidence of governmental abrogation of the civil and human rights of its citizens and their families. A must-read.

Worth the time to read and reflect upon the author's journey
By Kaui
I read this book with my three boys (ages 13 and a pair of 12 year old twins) as an adjunct to Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. I read Diary of a Young Girl as a pre-read for the twins' 7th grade literature assignments coming up this school year. The book was dreaded by the boys but ended up being "not so bad." As an additional perspective on WWII, following the recommendation of the twins' academic counselor, we read this book, which was very good and a bit more relevant to half-Chinese kids growing up in California.

Farewell to Manzanar is a memoir, written by a woman who was 7 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. She is a Nissei, which is a first-generation Japanese; her father left Japan as a young man to try his luck in the U.S. The story starts with her memories of December 7, 1941, and moves through the multiple relocations and forced evacuations and mysterious arrest and imprisonment of her father. She describes Camp Manzanar, and reflects poignantly about her father's emotional challenges and her own struggle with racial and cultural duality.

This is a lovely, low-commitment read which lends touching insight not only into the terrible way Japanese-American civilians were treated by the American government, but also, more broadly, the challenges I believe all Asian cultures face - the dilemma of assimilation v. individual rights. Racial bias exists in the oddest places and often, when encountered, is either innocuous or ridiculous enough to warrant disbelief, dismissal. However, the stain of personal shame is unavoidable in all of these situations, and Farewell to Manzanar eloquently depicts this exquisite conundrum.

Climate Change and the Course of Global History: A Rough Journey (Studies in Environment and History), by John L. Brooke

Climate Change and the Course of Global History presents the first global study by a historian to fully integrate the earth-system approach of the new climate science with the material history of humanity. Part I argues that geological, environmental, and climatic history explain the pattern and pace of biological and human evolution. Part II explores the environmental circumstances of the rise of agriculture and the state in the Early and Mid-Holocene, and presents an analysis of human health from the Paleolithic through the rise of the state. Part III introduces the problem of economic growth and examines the human condition in the Late Holocene from the Bronze Age through the Black Death. Part IV explores the move to modernity, stressing the emerging role of human economic and energy systems as earth-system agents in the Anthropocene. Supported by climatic, demographic, and economic data, this provides a pathbreaking model for historians of the environment, the world, and science.

Review
"Think of this as travel writing of the highest order. A rough journey for mankind becomes a stimulating armchair adventure for the reader. This is big history, framed by big ideas but anchored in the very recent explosion of knowledge about climate through the ages and about our history and prehistory. Brooke skillfully navigates the interpretive hazards of proxy paleoclimate data. In Brooke's persuasive account, our evolution to modernity is not absolutely determined by climate and disease, but it has been substantially influenced by them. Our new knowledge shows that quite often these influences abruptly change course, and Brooke shows that much of our history is a consequence of societies scrambling to adjust."
Mark A. Cane, G. Unger Vetlesen Professor of Earth and Climate Sciences, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University

"John Brooke skillfully joins a vast scientific literature to the historiography of virtually every major region to argue that climatic shifts always have been the primary agency determining the pace and direction of human development. He thus offers an unprecedentedly coordinated global chronology as well as a nuanced, distinctly original understanding of the relation between endogenous and exogenous forces. A jaw-dropping tour de force."
Victor Lieberman, Raoul Wallenberg Distinguished University Professor of History, University of Michigan

"Readers with advanced degrees in meteorology, archaeology, economics and world environmental history will easily comprehend Brooke's magisterial survey-synthesis. For others, it poses an interesting challenge. The author's mastery and referencing of the vast technical literature in different disciplines is remarkable. ... The author also explains seven phases of climate history since 3000 BCE and three industrial revolutions. The consequence is a fundamental change from a lightly populated world controlled by nature to a heavily populated world controlled by both nature and human agency. Summing up: highly recommended."
F. N. Egerton, Choice

Excellent history
By Mansel G. Blackford
This volume is "big history" and "global history" at its best. Fully versed in both biological and hard sciences, historian John Brooke presents a masterful overview of the history of humankind from its beginning several million years ago to the present day. Throughout, Brooke illustrates the importance of climate changes in bringing about (indeed forcing) basic alterations in how people worldwide have lived. In very readable prose Brooke discusses how specific climate alterations deeply influenced the development of different types of human cultures over time. Part 1 of this volume analyzes the evolution of earth sytems from the formation of Earth about 4.6 billion years ago, and what those systems meant for living plants and creatures, through the development and global spread modern humankind. Part 2 examines the domestication of plants and animals, the development of agriculture, and the rise of state governments. Part 3 looks at ancient and medieval societies, and Part 4 examines human societies since about 1400 AD. Brooke stresses that climate changes and variabilities shaped human cultures until very recently. Only since the onset of industrialization has the relationship, Brooke shows, been reversed, with human actions shaping climate. Brooke's volume is essential for anyone interested in the course of history and current events--an enjoyable and valuable read.

Impressive and Important Book; 4.5 Stars
By R. Albin
This very impressive and very ambitious book is a strong and largely successful effort to demonstrate the decisive role of climate fluctuations in human history. A measure of Brooke's ambition is the very broad frame of the book. Brooke literally begins with the formation of the solar system and early history of the Earth and finishes with our contemporary confrontation with human-induced climate change. in the early chapters, Brooke discusses the emergence of the basic features of terrestrial geology and the emergence of life, the evolutionary history of hominins, and the nature of the major features of the present climate system. This is followed by chapters on human prehistory following the end of the last major glaciation, the development of agriculture and the emergence of early states, the development of early empires, the collapse of early empires across many parts of the globe, the rise and fall of a variety of successor states-empires, the impact of true globalization with the exploitation of the western hemisphere, the early modern period, and the explosive development of scientific-industrial society.

Brooke's scholarship is remarkable as this book integrates geology, climatology, archaeology, and historical scholarship proper across many, many millenia. The major theme is the essentially determinate impact of climate changes, and to a lesser degree, epidemic disease, on human history. This is true for both major transitions, such as the end of the last glacial epoch creating the conditions for agriculture and sedentism, and the impact of less dramatic changes on the history of specific civilizations and societies. Examples of the latter include the impact of global cooling and epidemic disease on the Roman Empire, the demise of the classic Maya, the Black Death and the end of Medieval Europe, and the traumatic Little Age centered on the 17th century. Brooke consistently contrasts the impact of these exogenous shocks with a naive Malthusian view of the fate of civilizations and societies being determined by endogenous overshoot of carrying capacity. Brooke has an interesting view of preindustrial societies. He views them as more resilient, better adjusted to their environments, and over the longer term, more creative than suggested by naive Malthusian views. Brooke explicitly states repeatedly that absent exogenous shocks, premodern societies would be stable over very long periods. In an interesting, and in my view, very well justified analysis, Brooke sees our industrial civilization, which has liberated us from many traditional environmental constraints, as producing greater danger of a disastrous Malthusian overshoot.

Brooke amply demonstrates his basic thesis. The sheer volume and detail of Brooke's analyses leave no doubt as to the critical and in many cases, determinate effects of climate fluctuations on human history. I have to stress that this is not a schematic presentation. Brooke includes many detailed analyses drawing on a remarkably wide range of sources and clearly demonstrating the reality of his thesis in many contexts. In this respect, I think this book will be a landmark in historical scholarship and the point of departure for much, much future work.

This book is not, however, without some flaws, both in analysis and presentation. Some of these are unavoidable. Paleoclimatology is a dynamic discipline and some of the facts accepted when Brooke was writing are now wrong or incomplete. The role of solar changes in the Little Ice Age has been controversial and newer data suggest it was driven mainly by volcanism. Brooke ties the rapid emergence and collapse of Cahokia to climate changes, which is justified but very recent analyses tie the history of Cahokia specifically to the frequency massive floods in the Mississippi valley. I think a bigger problem is Brooke's consistent contrast of his view of exogenous climate and epidemiologic shocks with naive Malthusianism. As he admits in some of his detailed analyses, there are commonly important interactions between these shocks, and population growth and environmental degradation. To some extent, his description of Malthusianism is a bit of a straw man as a fluctuating environment can easily be accommodated in a Malthusian model by specifying that the critical limits must be below the range of significant fluctuations. In addition, as he sometimes acknowledges, epidemic disease is density and interaction dependent, so it inevitably has a somewhat Malthusian component.

While I respect Brooke's really impressive effort to present the whole story in the broadest sense possible, the initial chapters on early Earth history are not crucial to his main argument and detract from the presentation of the main story. These pages would have been better spent on clearer exposition the recent climate system. They also contain some errors and misunderstandings. Eurkaryotes were not, for example, responsible for the great oxygenation event. Brooke also makes too much of the punctuated equilibrium concept. Brooke has also been served poorly by this publisher. There a lot of important figures, charts, and tables in this book but their reproduction quality is mediocre at best. Even worse, they are not placed at the appropriate points in the text but packed together at the beginnings of each major section. This makes more work for readers and a book of this importance deserves better.

Brave attempt to cover a huge range in a smart but accessible way.
By Leif Jerram
I'm a history professor (lecturer in the UK!), and I really appreciated this book. First of all, it's scientific, but readable. The prose carries you along. Secondly, it masters a huge amount of scholarship and digests if for you. Most historians deal with tiny fragments of time, and tiny areas of geography, so this was really good to see! I learnt a lot, and it was the opposite of painful reading.
