Unusual BDSM story - but very interesting

I have to preface this by saying I have not read a lot of BDSM. But of what I have read, this is not typical. This story was a very interesting look into the psychology of a true submissive. The plot involves a young american who has played a bit in the BDSM clubs but has not been satisfied. She feels she wants to be trained as a true submissive. (full time lifestyle as opposed to just playing in the clubs.) She finds a reclusive but renowned trainer in England and convinces him to train her. The story describes her 2 weeks of training at his house in England as she struggles between her innate desire to be a submissive and her desire to have things done her way. For instance, when the driver meets her at the airport to pick her up, he asks her for her documents, and money, then has her throw everything else, including her very exspensive handbag in the trash. The first of her many difficult emotional struggles. In addition to the emotional and psycological challanges, there is plenty of X rated content, and the story does end HEA. I found the book to be very entertaining, almost educational!

The author sets the bar high for this genre

It's been a few weeks since I read this novel, but the story has stuck with me.

The beginning starts Alana, the main character, just arriving in England to meet with Ethan, the master Dom that has reluctantly agreed to train her. He has refrained from it in recent years for personal reasons, but Alana insisted that only he could help her. From the airport to the end of the story, she battles with the demands he places on her as a submissive. No aspect of her life is left untouched by his control.

There are other secondary characters under Ethan's employ that play important roles as well which helped to add more depth. Despite the length of the novel, character development was good. I couldn't exactly buy the idea of her falling in love under the circumstances and so quickly, but the story was definitely one of the most erotic I've ever read. If your into this genre, you should really enjoy this book.

For a short novel, it's keep you on the edge of your seat

If I could have given this book 4-1/2 stars, I would have. But I thought it deserved more recognition, so 5 stars it is. It's a really, really good erotic short story. One might want to have a toy or partner near by. A constant turn on from the first few pages. Very well written...a few grammatical/punctuation errors. I'm in the process of finding more to read from this author. I highly recommend it.

Tiersma contends that this dual nature of legal language profoundly affects the legal profession to this day. A thoughtful, linguistic perspective on legal language.

I'm a teacher of legal writing, and I want all my students to read this book--and every lawyer, too. It offers insights into legal language that I have not seen anywhere else: how lawyers use language to set themselves apart; how statutes employ archaisms to present an air of authority; how jury instructions confuse jurors.
It also presents the many reasons that legal language came to be the way it is, while avoiding simplistic explanations. And though it discusses many ways that legal language fails us, it gives just as many ways to improve it.
Most important, the book takes legal language seriously, calling it a "sublanguage" of English and "a set of linguistic features that are superimposed on everyday speech." At the same time, it recognizes that lawyers who care about communicating will have to make difficult decisions about what parts of legal language to keep and what parts to abandon.

Mr. Tiersma's book is a wonderful shibboleth into the miasmatic and confusing world of the legal lexicon. A superlative source for clear prose. Wait, I thought that it was lawyers who used confusing language.

Baddest man on the planet writes the best book of the year

The day this book was released, I read an excerpt posted somewhere or another wherein Tyson strangles Don King from the back seat of a limousine that King is driving. That sold me - I thought I was going to read a couple hundred pages of Mike Tyson telling insane stories. What I got was immeasurably better.

This book is Mike Tyson's life story, in Mike Tyson's words, as told to a writer. It might not be the undisputed truth, but it is his truth, and it's his entire truth. It is brutally, unforgivingly honest, and while he has few kind words for the likes of King, Robin Givens, and Desiree Washington, no one fares worse in these pages than Tyson himself.

Whatever you may think of Tyson, he is without a doubt one of the most fascinating sports figures of the past hundred years. He's a study in contradictions: a terrifying boxer with a temper that one could charitably describe as "mercurial" and yet he speaks softly, almost effeminately, with a lisp. The man said he was going to eat Lennox Lewis' children and praised Allah in the same sentence. He was paid tens of millions of dollars for fights that often lasted less than one round, and was bankrupt within ten years. Of course this guy's story is going to be great.

But the two episodes in his life that he's most known for, his tumultuous (and allegedly abusive) marriage to Robin Givens, and his rape trial after a night with pageant contestant Desiree Washington gone horribly, irreversibly wrong, aren't glossed over. At all. If anything, he talks about them - the trial in particular - in detail that's simply uncomfortable. And it has to be. If he's to have any absolution, any redemption in the public's eye, he has to be able to tell his side of the story for those who want to hear it, those that wonder if perhaps his in-ring persona was unfairly turned against him.

Undisputed Truth spends many, many chapters on how that persona developed, from both his cruel childhood on the streets of Brooklyn, to his being taught by Cus, the only father figure he'd ever known. Tyson's relationship with Cus is a well-known and oft-romanticized slice of boxing history, and the realization that everything that he learned from his childhood and from Cus that made him the tremendous fighter that he was being precisely what ensured his time at the top was so short and why he was so ill-prepared for life as Iron Mike had to have been painful to come to and write about.

Whether you find Tyson as fascinating as I do, or want to learn more about the man behind the glove (and there's much, much more to him than I expected), or just want to know what in the world he was thinking with that tattoo, you absolutely must read this book. Don't expect 500+ pages of back-patting. All too often, memoirs are just a remembrance of happy times, rough patches smoothed over or omitted entirely. It's refreshing to read someone so well-known write something so unflinchingly honest about himself. This dives headfirst into the realm of absolute self-loathing. However much you might despise Mike Tyson for some of the things he's done in his life, he despises himself so much more for them.

I want to think that this is the time he gets it right. That this is the time he has another chance and doesn't throw it away. That he's able to wipe away a little of the stain from his legacy, to be able to provide for his family, to find some peace. After reading his story, I'm not sure, but I'm rooting for him. Just like the old days.

60 yr old, white, mother of 5 (who used to hate him) LIKES MIKE!!!

I confess I am only on chapter 2. It was very hard to put this book down after starting it yesterday. I found myself thinking about what I would say in a review. So far, it is a great read. It is well-written in a style that lets Mike Tyson's own personality and the unique flavor of his experiences tell his story. This is coming from a 60 year old, conservative, white mother of five, who thought Mike Tyson a bad role model for the same reasons he did. I was the last person who would have wanted to read something by Mike Tyson. A few years ago after one of his well-publicized scrapes, I saw him do a couple of interviews and realized he was developing insight. Suddenly, I liked him. I was rooting for him. I still am. I wonder if he even knows how important his story is.
I will update this after I finish.

Finished it and still give 5 stars. Got reminded of why I did not like him and then reminded of why I like him now. What Cus taught about becoming a champ now is being applied to the next phase of Mike's life. I believe he can do it. This is absolutely a story of one man's very tough journey.

A great read. Now wondering who will play the young Mike Tyson in the movie. There is so much to tell, maybe it should be a series (on cable, for the language and subject matter ).

Not for the faint of heart...

This is a tough read. Mike's had a tough life, but there is a lot of wisdom in his words. I honestly wondered if people who grow up like him, on the streets, practically feral, might prefer the jails because there is finally structure. It's a brutally honest look into a life so different from mine. Interestingly, we were born the same year, so all things considered, he just got the short straw when it came to parents. I am so glad to see how far he's come. His awakenings are hard-won. He can look back on such a harsh history (I think worse than "The Glass Castle" for upbringings) and see the light. Really interesting read and I've never watched a boxing match in my life.

About the Author
The Editor: Knut Lundby is Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo, Norway. He holds a Dr.philos. in sociology from the University of Oslo. He is the director of the Mediatized Stories project which this book draws upon.

Best Scholarly Book on Digital Storytelling to Date

If you are an educator or multimedia developer with an interest in digital storytelling, this may not be the book for you. It won't give you much guidance on how to lead others in telling personal stories through screen media. If, however, you are a scholar interested in theory and research on the reciprocal relationship between communications media and the authoring and interpretation of narratives, or the function of digital storytelling for the storytellers, this is the best book available on the topic.

The book is an edited anthology of 16 chapters held together fairly well by a focus on digital storytelling and "mediatization", theorizing the relationship between media and social practice. The authors begin with Digital Storytelling as developed by Lambert and the Center for Digital Storytelling at Berkeley, but expanded to include large-scale undertakings like the BBC's Telling Lives and Capture Wales projects, and Australia's efforts to bring digital storytelling into schools. Attention is also paid to the general and unorganized distribution of narratives through Web 2.0. There are some familiar US contributors (Glynda Hull, James Wertsch), but most of the authors are from Scandinavia, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, and they bring perspectives of media theorists together with cultural psychologists. Together, they invigorate thinking about the implications of digital narratives by ordinary people.

A Dangerous Love Story

A young woman gets herself involved into the middle of a rescue attempt to free some prisoners of a terrorist group.

Said young woman finds herself falling in love with the man the United States has brought in to lead the rescue, but she thinks he is one of the bad guys.

Sparks fly, chemistry is right and love develops.

The novel contains a good story line that holds the reader's interest. There are some sexy love scenes but not graphic to be considered erotica. Probably appropriate for persons 17 years and above.

Worst writing she has ever done. The concept was good, but the verbiage and the way the strife between the main characters was presented was just plain annoying. I've read plenty of her other books and really enjoyed them, but this one - not so much.
