About the Author
Mark Cleghorn (www.markcleghorn.com) is considered to be one of the most creative and influential portrait and wedding photographers practising and lecturing today. Mark is one of a few photographers in the world to be awarded a "Fellowship" by all three major photographic organisations. A professional photographer for more than 20 years, he specialises in portraiture and wedding photography. Mark lives in Cardiff and this is his second book.

Book review: Wedding Photography by Cleghorn

This book grows on you. It's a hardback with a nice book cover. At first glance it seems out of date in it's presentation. It leans towards the Top Hat and Tails wedding scenario. It isn't glitzy with full page fairy tale example shots though. There's not a lot of technical advice on setup of individual shots. If you need that don't do weddings. But I found myself reading it 3 times from cover to cover. The book flows through the typical wedding scenario in a precise timeline approach. Much like a military mission briefing! It just makes a lot sense with practical advice for every situation in the wedding work flow. Included is Cleghorn's list of 48 must have shots. He emphasizes planning and preparations as key values to success. Since I shoot mostly less formal outdoor weddings it was a good review for me (preparations and planning) weeks before (and night before) the big day. There are no second chances at weddings! A missed shot is gone forever.
He correctly points out that no matter how modern/contemporary the clients may be there are some very traditional expectations to every wedding. After all mom and dad must be happy too. He provides some helpful checklists for dealing with client interviews to determine the expectations and deliverables to fulfill the clients desires. This is a good book for the photographer who may have a few weddings under his belt and can understand from experience how fast paced a 6-8 hour wedding shoot is and how quickly it can get out of control(ie:lost shot opportunities). Preparation and planning are definitely the key to success.
A large portion of the book (~30%)is dedicated to post-production workflow using photoshop and associated programs to create the albums, slide shows, dvd's in a finished product. If you are a photoshop "pro" you may think to glance over this section quickly but there is a lot of practical business info embedded here. Figuring out how to deliver the finished product and get paid for your work is not an easy step for most photographers. Many just like to take the pictures. But getting paid determines whether you will be in viable business or not. I like this book a lot. I'd definitely like to work with Mr. Cleghorn.

I Love this book, its great if your starting out, it describes what you have to do or need to get but also gives you images. He gives you 48 of the must have wedding images checklist which is in written but next to the checklist are pictures of every point in the checklist, which i consider is great for all of those who have a difficulty trying to image what he is talking about!

The book includes a small review over lenses, cameras body types, flash, off camera flash, then its what he does before a wedding. you can find questions you should ask at the first wedding interview and questions that you may be asked, also what to do the day before the wedding. picture examples of the bride getting ready, details, bridesmaids, parents, the groom, the church, arriving to the church, guest, the ceremony, leaving, the party, and much more! i have this book for about a year now and i am constantly going back to the book and reading over a certain chapter just to refresh my memory!

About the Author
Lorraine Hansberry was the youngest American playwright ever to win the Best American Play Award from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. Her other worksinclude The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and Les Blancs. She died of cancer at thirty-four.

Much more powerful than Raisin in the Sun

Lorraine Hansberry is best remembered for "Raisin in the Sun" which, even today, many feel is a strong statement against racism. However, "Raisin" pales in comparison to "Les Blancs", a much more militant and radical statement which, I have not doubt, must have genuinely frightened the liberal establishment in the 1960's. This play was decades ahead of it's time and it is no wonder that the more comfortable "Raisin" is what Ms Hansberry is mostly remembered for. Anyone who knows both of these works will realize that the world lost a great treasure when cancer stole this brilliant African-American lesbian's life from us when she was just 34. (Although Ms. Hansberry, married a white Jewish man, Robert Nemiroff in 1953, the couple separated in 1957 and divorced in 1964. She wrote some articles for "The Ladder", the first lesbian periodical in the United States, in the late 1950's.)

Beautiful work by a great artist. Died way too young. She was ahead of her time. Her plays are relevant today. From the introduction: " Hansberry once said in an interview that her goal as a dramatist was to “reach a little closer to people, to see if we can share some illumination about each other.”

Hansberry was a great writer who wrote extensively about racial injustice in the United States. These plays continue her condemnation of racism past and present. In Les Blancs Hansberry writes primarily about the freedom struggle in Africa. The "problem" with this is that it is a play, and it requires a good imagination or having seen the play to fully visualize some the role of the unnamed and only woman character, who is so vital to the play that she might be considered the most important character.

More problematical for me is her satire of the liberal American journalist who plays a recurring if minor role. It is sometimes an all-too-true indictment and it reflects her justified anger and despair at the state of race relations in America at the end of the sixties, but it is a cardboard figure and therefore potentially polarizing. I have read that it did so at the first performance in 1970. I did not find it polarizing, more sad that Hansberry seemed to have lost hope, but as satires go, it was more heavy handed than most.

Finds the inner child in all of us and makes us laugh (or, at least, nervously chuckle) in the face of our once-mighty fears

Fran Krause's web comic immediately captures the essence of our, often unique and macabre, childhood fears. His book, a collection of never before seen comics as well as a few of the most popular ones displayed online, is an excellent coffee table book and conversation starter. One would be hard pressed to find a friend or relative who doesn't relate to at least one of Krause's scenarios, which range in tone from light hearted and ridiculous to downright bone-chilling. An absolute must-have for anyone wanting to be amused and unsettled in the same, glorious moment.

Be afraid. The worst could happen.

Fran Krause sees peril all around him, real, potential, or purely fantastical. Based on some of his own fears, as well as some solicited from readers of his blog, he has created a collection of comics encouraging just a little bit more fear. Deep Dark Fears will ring true with many readers. Reactions will range from, "I am scared of the same thing!" to "That's ridiculous!" to "I never thought of that--but now I will!"

I don't worry so much about ghosts or a parallel world in the mirror or my loved ones being reincarnated as pets, who then see me going to the bathroom. But I can see how some might! More compelling are the fears that pretty much all of us can relate to, like being caught publicly doing something on social media, like "Facebook stalking" your old girlfriend. And who can't relate to being afraid of becoming "an old person who makes kids afraid of getting old"?

Krause's humor is on the dark side, funny and thoughtful. His drawings are the sort that makes you feel like anyone could draw them. I mean that in the best sense--the art conveys a sense of shared experience. Deep Dark Fears reminds me of my friend who always seemed to imagine the worst that could happen. Maybe you've never been afraid of being cut in half by the elevator. But pick up Deep Dark Fears and you're sure to find some familiar fears--and maybe some new ones, too.

Hilarious content

I found this book in a store and decided to buy a copy online. I like the fears the comics with them are hilarious. I'm hoping to use a few of them as writing prompts for future exercises. Good stuff.

AN ENGAGING STORY OF THE FIRST SUBMARINE WAR

Many years ago, I bought this book both because of the subject matter and the fact that the bookstore was offering it for sale at a major discount. Plenty of books are to be found on the use of U-Boats in the Second World War. But, by way of contrast, there are few books on the market about the role U-Boats played on the high seas during the First World War.

The book begins by providing a short history of the submarine's development and the earliest U-boats used by the Germans upon the outbreak of war. The U-boat in 1914 was a flimsy vessel, more suited to operating in coastal areas than in deep water. But the sinking within the space of an hour of the British warships Hogue, Aboukir, and Cressy by U-9 (under the command of Otto Weddigen) on September 22, 1914 provided ample proof of the submarine's potential as a lethal weapon.

As the British tightened their naval blockade of Germany (which largely neutralized the Kaiser's High Seas Fleet), work proceeded apace on the development and deployment of more U-boats in the waters around Britain and in the Atlantic (later extended to the Mediterranean and the waters around Russia and Turkey).

The U-boats began their activities in earnest in October 1914.
U-boats were first used as commerce raiders, which took pains to avoid attacks on neutral shipping while engaging in attacks on Allied merchant shipping subject to the existing "prize rules", which were a set of rules observed by warring nations for the treatment at sea of enemy civilian crews and their passengers. However, it soon became clear to the Germans that strict adherence to these rules negated the effectiveness of the U-boat. (The British were also beginning to arm many of their merchant ships, so when an unsuspecting U-boat would surface to warn the enemy merchant ship it had stalked underwater that it would be subject to attack and to evacuate its crew within a proscribed time period, the U-boat, as the hunter, would suddenly find itself as the hunted when the merchant ship would unmask its guns and promptly open fire upon it.) Consequently, before the end of 1915, the Germans came to rely increasingly on stealth in its use of U-boats.

Unrestricted submarine warfare was adopted in 1916, then suspended for a short time after U.S. complaints to Germany about U-boat attacks on its shipping in Allied waters. But by February 1917, in light of the disclosure of the Zimmermann Telegram to the U.S. by British naval intelligence (the telegram detailed an offer by Germany to Mexico to enter the war against the U.S., in exchange for, with German help, regaining Arizona and New Mexico), Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare.

This book does a splendid job in detailing the first submarine war. What I found remarkable was the achievement of Lothar von Arnauld de la Peri�re, the top U-boat ace of the war, who was credited with sinking 194 Allied ships. (Most of the sinkings were achieved with the 8.8cm deck gun that de la Peri�re used in surface actions.)

INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE AT ALL TIMES- NEVER BORING

Most books on U boat warfare cover the Second World War exclusively, so I was happy to read Gray's history of the action in the first one. The book is a thriller from start to finish and is never boring at any point. It begins with a brief description of the first submarines and then jumps to the action of 1914-18. We learn about the many sinkings of Allied merchant and naval craft and of the U boats themselves. Gray traces the evolution of the conflict well and gives the reader a feeling for what must have been in the minds of the combatants as events became increasingly desperate.
I would encourage anyone interested in naval issues to read this book. Only those wishing to know the details on every sinking of the war will be at all dissapointed.

Great overview

You can see from reading this book why the Germans placed so much faith in the Uboat. Their navy was so far behind the British and the submarine was a "catch up" weapon to be used until they could build up a navy to compete with Great Britain. Unfortunately,and it is well shown in the book,the submarine even before Sonar had alot of limitations.The Uboat was also seen as an "unfair" type weapon one that would be classified today as somewhat terrorist.The Germans initially hoped the sub could take out English Warships but very early on it was shown that British anti-submarine warfare made it very dangerous for a sub to take on a warship. Although there were a few instances of a British or American warship going down to a sub,there was not enough instances to make the sub a tactical weapon.
So, according to Grays' book, German Uboats evolve into being used as a strategic weapon by disrupting shipping commerce and sinking not warships but unarmed commerce ships.This German strategic use of Uboats(which the allies also use against Germany)! opens up a whole "can of worms" in regard to international business relations and "war crimes" violations.Germanys' use of Uboats is what eventually dragged the United States into WW1. Later how can the allies prosecute the Germans for war crimes when both sides are targeting civilian shipping?
Early on in WW1,the British developed the hydrophone and depth charges to locate and destroy Uboats. The development of convoys and escorts to protect merchant ships also made submarining a risky business. I was surprised throughout the book at how many submarines the Germans had on patrol and how many of them the British were able to destroy, despite the complete absence of electronic detection devices.
By the time WW2 comes on,the German Navy is completely unprepared once again,mainly due to the Versailles Treaty restrictions, and goes back to their old standard "catch up" weapon,the submarine.This time however the British have been investing in research on RADAR and SONAR,which up the risk factors for the Uboats.Also the use of carrier and shore based aircraft make the Uboat considerably more vulnerable.The Germans never had much of a carrier program or sea planes and this likewise would hurt them in WW2.The Versailles Traety once again the main cause for Hitlers' rise is also the main reason for the German defeat.The German navy is not prepared for the war,really not even close to competing with Britain.
If the Germans had been as capable of electronic developments as the British had been,who knows how the Battle of the Atlantic would have faired.Especially when"unrestricted submarine warfare" is released on the world by Germany a second time.The British however were always able to figure out a new way to defeat the Uboats despite a setback or two.But from a read of this book it was awfully tense and too close for comfort a number of times.There is little description of the types,classes,technological evolution of the numerous types of German Uboats in the book and not a whole lot of pictures or maps. But: this book is a great picture of what the Uboat war of WW1 was all about. The book was previously entitled the "Killing Time",I guess because Uboating although risky in WW1,was still whole worlds less risky than in WW2.
