Mary Alice NEVER disappoints. Must read - it's not just for the holidays!

Mary Alice doesn't disappoint in this continuation of her Lowcountry Summer series. Spending time on Jeremy Creek in McClellanville this past summer enabled me to see so clearly every path, road, home, shop and the restaurant she writes about in the book.

A Lowcountry Christmas is based on Taylor McClellan whom we met earlier in the Lowcountry Summer series. Taylor is now married to Harper, and they have a daughter, Marietta and his Lab/Great Dane dog, Thor. The book begins on Christmas Eve 2015 with Taylor, so happy with his young family. He reflects on the holiday season five years prior when he returned home from Afghanistan, wounded and the sole survivor of the platoon he led and whose Humvee was hit by an IED while patrolling the desert and defending the border. Taylor not only had terrible physical wounds, but moreover PTSD. He is given a therapy dog by a Pets for Vets in hopes of helping him cope with repercussions of the horror of what happened in the desert. This story is how an unbreakable bond of love and trust between a man and his dog can be one of the greatest healing powers.

Beautifully written, this book tells a story from the eyes of Taylor, his 10 year old brother, Miller and their mother, Jenny. This is a story that takes a long overdue and realistic first, second and third person look at the effects of PTSD. We see and feel, first hand, what Taylor (and his family) goes through every day - things that "we" typically are not affected by, such as a car that backfires on the street - and the effect on someone who is suffering PTSD. We see the struggle of a Taylor's dad, Alistair, a lifelong shrimper who has no other option but to take his boat, the Miss Jenny (named for his wife) out of commission because he and his fellow shrimpers can't compete with the importers' lower prices. He's now working any job he can find just to make ends meet.

This heartwarming book is the story of how a service dog not only brings a Marine back to life, but unites a family torn by the stresses of keeping a family afloat amidst uncertain financial times and the precarious future of an industry in need of a boost. Mary Alice reminds us that, at the end of the day, family is most important.

I love reading Mary Alice Monroe, not only because she's a gifted writer, but because of her ongoing dedication to the conservation of this earth and the creatures on it - and now to her commitment to the preservation of those who have fought tirelessly for freedom - many whom have returned scarred, both emotionally and physically, and have been pushed aside or out and forgotten. #WoundedWarriors #PetsForVets #SCShrimpers

Fantastic !!!

I have always enjoyed Mary Alice Monroe's books, but this one tops them all !
It was beautifully and sensitively written.
I laughed... I cried.... I cried some more...... all happy tears.
I have a friend in her 30s who served in Afghanistan and recently received her own service dog. I have discussed this book with her niece and feel very comfortable passing this book on to her aunt.
Who would not love each of the characters?
The Epilogue was a wonderful ending to this touching story.
I highly recommend this book.

Another fantastic book from Mary Alice Monroe

Another amazing read from my favorite author. Mary Alice combines family dynamics, PTSD, service dogs, the plight of the shrimpers along our eastern coast, and Christmas all in one fantastic read. You will laugh, cry, and at some level relate to this family. This is not just a Christmas book, but one you will read and treasure every season, but especially now as the holidays approach.

Self-contained Encyclopedia! All you need is your patience!

This encyclopedic monograph is now a classic of this field,
lambda-calculus, which is the theoretical basis of practical
functional programming languages such as Standard ML, CAML, Haskell etc.
This book itself is purely theoretical and principally aimed for researchers/students of its field.
This book is very comprehensive. In fact, this book successfully compiles almost all results on type-free lambda-calculus up to the time of its publication (early 1980's).
Surprisingly enough!, however, this very technical encyclopedic monograph is self-contained.
Proofs of all theorems/lemmata are given up to details except for cases that they are intentionally left for excercises.
Therefore, even a novice of its field can follow all of the proofs. The only one thing that such a novice must have is patience. His/her patience will surely be rewarded.
Backgrounds assumed in this encyclopedic monograph is the very beginning level understanding of mathematical logic. If you are not familiar with math logic, you can learn the necessary backgrounds with any introductory textbooks on math logic.
All more technical notions and notations are defined/explained in this book. Many interesting examples are given.
Exercises at the end of each charpter are very helpful and also are very interesting. The author clearly paid much attention and took care on the arrangement of exercises so that readers can tackle easier one at first. Moreover such carefully arranged exercises tell readers more. Readers will understand very delicate but important points during solving exercises by themselves. In other words, the last sentence means the following fact: imagine there are two intuitively similar notions
(it is often the case that very abstract theory has many such pairs of notions) that novices can confuse each other. Solving one exercise tell the novice that one notion is not implied from the other. Also solving another exercise tell vice-versa.
Indices and references are very useful. In fact, indices are carefully designed. Not only the index of technical terms, there are indices for symbols and authors (of references refered in the main text). References are very comprehensive.
There are very few typos (another surprising points! Math books almost always handreds of typos) except for misuses of type-faces which are clearly due to typesetting by the publisher.
This book, as I pointed before, is on pure math logic and its readership is clearly researchers/students of its field.
But, as a computer scientist, I recommend this book to all of the functional programmers, who, at least, are serious about the background of their profession.
If you read this book, you will understand that there is a very beautiful (though abstract) world of theories behind ML/Haskell programming.
If you are a student who wants study lambda-calculus, combinatory logic, type theory, constructive math, etc.,
then, this book is for you, too, of course.
This encyclopedia doubtlessly will give you the basis to become the researcher on such fields.

About the Author
Theodore C. Denise received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and taught at Syracuse University

Nicholas White obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University and currently serves as chair of the philosophy department at the University of California, Irvine. He specializes in Greek philosophy, epistemology, and ethics, having written several books and articles on each of these topics.

Sheldon P. Peterfreund taught at Syracuse University for over 40 years, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

This is the textbook I used for my Ethics class at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. It is a fantastic collection of ethical thought spanning 2,400 years. I was very surprised to realize how much of our own ethical thought, as well as legal system, is based on the beliefs and essays of previous philosophers. The best parts of this book are the introductions. Because this book is composed of exerpts from larger works, the introductions do a splendid job of giving the authors' historical background and explaining their writings. The introductions are so clear and concise that one could probably just read them and understand the ideas and arguments perfectly.

Some pacing issues, but still a great read

I had high expectations for this book. Partly because it’s a Suzanne Brockmann creation and partly because it just so happens that Gina/Max and Molly/Jones are my favorite pairings in this series. The fact that the story allowed Jules, my favorite character, to adapt a true leadership role was icing on the cake.
The story starts with a bang, when Jules and Max learn that the Gina was killed in a terrorist attack. After that the first half of the book rotates between two different flashback periods and present day. I’m still not sure how I feel about this. The flashbacks were interesting, and the one set did show how Gina, Molly, and Jones connected, but they also made the novel’s pacing very choppy and I’m not completely convinced they were necessary.
If you like angst, this is the story for you. There’s plenty to go around, plus lots of regret. The good news is that Jules is around to provide some laugh out loud moments despite all the carnage. Don’t assume that Jules is a one dimensional character that’s only around to provide comic relief. I think he’s probably one of Brockmann’s most highly developed characters and this story provides him with a much needed opportunity to shine.
At about the half way point, the story stays focused in the present and the sexy times begin. At this point the pacing of the novel proceeds at break neck speed. There are many points where the story steps away from any semblance of believability and there are also times when things just get downright confusing. Still, despite the pacing issues, I was satisfied with the story and will be revisiting it in the future.

Brockmann knows how to develop characters

There isn't a single Suzanne Brockmann book that I have not enjoyed. Some I like more than others. She is in a class by herself with her ability to create characters that you care about and that you will come back to again and again. This recent book is part of her trouble shooters series. I think it reads better if you work your way through the series, but will also hold up on it's own. It offers the story of Max and Gina. They first appeared in my favorite Suzanne Brockmann book "Over the Edge". You get a great deal more information about their relationship in "Gone too far". As is typical with Brockmann, she holds other story lines effortlessly in her books. This book also offers a continuation of the story of Jones and Molly Anderson from "Out of Control".

The thing I love the most about Brockmann is her ability to create a fierce, proud, amazing, manly character with all of the foibles and insecurities and messy screw ups that all human beings suffer with. Max is no different. He is the super uber professional negotiator for the FBI. He is always in control and utterly capable. Inside he is a mess, learning to deal with his out of control feelings for Gina - a woman who bravely suffered a terrorist kidnapping plot and gang rape. This book shows her ability to be Max Beghat's hero. She, once again, is in danger and Max must face his fear and find his heart and the girl. I recommend the entire series... this book being a very satisfying answer to characters you come to care about.
