Not just GREAT for interviews

While I wasn't looking for advice on interviewing for a new job for myself (even though there is fantastic information in there), I picked up Interview Intervention for some tips on interviewing potential candidates for my team.

What I was surprised to find is that there are extremely valuable tips in this book for Sales Professionals working in a B2B setting. After all, when you are making a sales presentation to a potential customer, they are essentially interviewing you as a candidate for a major position in their organization. They are trying to see if your product or service can meet their needs, but more importantly if YOU are the right fit for them.

I am not one for finding the 'secret' to success in a book. What is surprising about this book is the author's ability to communicate in real-world terms versus the class room, what you need to consider when interviewing. It is incredibly clever and easily understood-much like my mom's brownie recipe.

In essence this book is a recipe using everyday ingredients to create a phenomenal outcome. I highly recommend this read for it worked for me.

James H. Myers, Ph.D. was professor of marketing at the Drucker School at Claremont Graduate University, for 22 years. Prior to that, he taught for 20 years at the Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Southern California. Before entering academia, Myers was manager of the Management Research Division at the Prudential Insurance Company’s regional headquarters in Los Angeles. Myers is the author or coauthor of 7 books and more than 60 articles in the areas of marketing management, strategic marketing research, and customer satisfaction. He has also given many presentations on these and other topics to business and professional groups throughout the country. Myers has done extensive consulting in the areas of marketing research, market segmentation, product/service positioning, and new product opportunity identification. I am very, very impressed. This really is one of the best opening works that I can recall. I have a library of six or seven hundred chess books, and I don't think that it includes any, devoted to a specific opening system, better than this one. It is beyond thorough, delving deeply into, organizing, and evaluating some of the most complicated, important and heretofore obscure variations in all of chess theory. It is not a repertoire book, but a full exploration of the possibilities for either side. The evaluations exaggerate neither side's chances.

It is clear and concise. The diction is formal but still engaging. It is refreshingly free of the self-congratulation, upon finding this or that new idea, that has recently afflicted the chess opening literature. There is enough discussion of important positions that the amateur can gain significant insights from the Grandmaster, but nothing that merely points out the obvious.

But the chess is marvelous! There is so much complexity and dynamism here. Anyone playing either the Noteboom or the Marshall Gambit from either side must have this book. If you play 1.d4 or answer 1.d4 with 1...d5, buy it. Buy it anyway for the fascinating exploration of fighting chess that it is. Playing through these variations, you can hear the opposing shields thumping together, and the clash of sword against sword.

Best opening book I have ever read

An excellent book, very highly recommended. It is probably the best written opening book I have ever read. It covers mostly two openings, the Noteboom Variation after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c5 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 dxc4 (193 pages) and the Marshall (Slav) Gambit after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c5 3.Nc3 c6 4.e4 (134 pages). The remainder of the book (113 pages) is devoted to various anti-triangle systems. It is by far the most comprehensive treatment of either the Noteboom Variation (a sentimental favorite of mine) and the Marshall (Slav) Gambit I have ever seen, and all the theory and games are fairly recent. Because of its narrow focus, it's probably more suitable to intermediate and advanced players.

For those not familiar with either the Noteboom Variation and the Marshall (Slav) Gambit, two relatively rare openings, this book will be a revelation. The Noteboom is characterized by two advanced passed pawns by Black and tight control of the center by White, along with the two bishops. White must typically win in the middlegame or he will likely lose the endgame. The Marshall (Slav) Gambit is characterized by wide open play where White's advantage in development compensates (or tries to) for the pawn minus. The lines for both variations are unbalanced, complex, and ultrasharp, where one misstep by either side can easily be fatal, and lead to a high percentage of wins for Black and relatively few draws. One does not often see a position with 8 connected passed pawns as occurred in one of the games listed! At the time I write this after 4.Nf3 dxc4 the chessgames.com database lists 589 games with 36.5% wins for White, 39.4% wins for Black, and 24.1% draws. After 4.e4 the chessgames.com database lists 442 games with 45.2% wins for White, 26.7% wins for Black, and 28.1% draws. So, if you need to win with Black, the Noteboom Variation may be of interest. And, when facing the Slav Triangle System as White, the Marshall (Slav) Gambit may also be of interest.

The book uses the analysis format where complete games are seldom given, allowing more information to be contained in the 448 pages. But each line is analyzed in detail, with alternatives explored, and an unbiased evaluation of the resulting positions (and the reasons for the evaluations) is always provided. There is a useful and complete index of variations at the end of the book.

The author acquired his FIDE GM title in 1993 and has extensive experience with both the White and Black sides of the Slav Triangle System. He has an easy to read writing style, and provides extensive explanations of the reasons behind the moves and each the lines. Each chapter and variation has both an introduction outlining the goals for both sides and a summary indicating how successful, if at all, each side was, and why. Particularly interesting is how the author "inches" forward in the Noteboom Variation alternative lines, from the start with 4...dxc4 to the main line reached after 5.a4 b4 6.e3 b5 7.Bd2 a5 8.axb5 Bxc3 9.Bxc3 cxb5 10.b3 Bb7 11.Bxc4 b4 12.Bb2 Nf6 13.Bd3. It really helps you understand the opening!

The book itself is of high quality. The type is well sized for the size of the book and easy on the eyes, with good spacing between the lines of text. The paper is thick and smooth and the binding robust. The book looks like it will stand up to wear and tear very well. Which is a good thing since I suspect that you will be using this book a lot, just like I will.

Quite an unusual effort from Lazyman, er ... I mean Everyman. A fully comprehensive and in depth look at a compelling opening system. Less prose than their usual efforts and chock full of original, honest, non-cherry picked analysis. The author is a real maestro with this system and it seems he has shared a lot of his real work efforts here and not just offered up the usual superficial treatise that Lazyman has come to be known for in their opening tomes.

A must buy for any chess players going with or against the Noteboom, lovers of fighting chess, and/or serious students of the game.

About the Author
Dr. Debra L. Nelson is the Spears School of Business Associates' Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Management at Oklahoma State University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington, where she was the recipient of the R. D. Irwin Dissertation Fellowship Award. Dr. Nelson is the author of over 90 journal articles focusing on organizational stress management, gender at work, and leadership. Her research has been published in the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT EXECUTIVE, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, MIS QUARTERLY, ORGANIZATIONAL DYNAMICS, JOURNAL OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR, and other journals. In addition, she is coauthor/coeditor of several books, including ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR: SCIENCE, THE REAL WORLD, AND YOU; POSITIVE ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (Sage, 2007); ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP (South-Western, Cengage Learning, 2004); GENDER, WORK STRESS, AND HEALTH (American Psychological Association, 2002); ADVANCING WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT (Blackwell, 2002); and PREVENTIVE STRESS MANAGEMENT IN ORGANIZATIONS (American Psychological Association, 1997). Dr. Nelson has also served as a consultant to several organizations including AT&T, American Fidelity Assurance, Sonic, State Farm Insurance, and Southwestern Bell. She has presented leadership and preventive stress management seminars for a host of organizations, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Conoco/Phillips, Oklahoma Gas and Electric, Oklahoma Natural Gas, and the Federal Aviation Administration. She has been honored with the Greiner Graduate Teaching Award, the Chandler-Frates and Reitz Graduate Teaching Award, the Regents' Distinguished Teaching Award, the Regents' Distinguished Research Award, and the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award at OSU. Dr. Nelson also serves on the editorial review boards of the JOURNAL OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR, JOURNAL OF LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL STUDIES, and LEADERSHIP.

Dr. James Campbell (Jim) Quick is John and Judy Goolsby Distinguished Professor in the Goolsby Leadership Academy, Distinguished Professor in the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, and Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Department of Management, College of Business at The University of Texas at Arlington. He earned an A.B. with Honors from Colgate University. He earned an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of Houston. He completed postgraduate courses in behavioral medicine (Harvard Medical School) and combat stress (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio). Dr. Quick is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the American Institute of Stress. Dr. Quick's and his brother's signature theory is preventive stress management, now in the APA Dictionary of Psychology (2007). Dr. Quick has over 100 books, book chapters, journal articles, and clinical monographs in 10 languages. Dr. Quick's awards and recognitions include Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Beta Delta honor societies membership; The Maroon Citation (Colgate University Alumni Corporation, 1993); 2002 Harry and Miriam Levinson Award (American Psychological Foundation); and a Presidential Citation (American Psychological Association, 2001). Quick won the 2007-2008 Honors College Outstanding Faculty Award and 2009 Award for Distinguished Record of Research at UT Arlington. Colonel Quick, United States Air Force Reserve (Ret.) was Distinguished Visiting Professor of Psychology, 59th Medical Wing (1999) and Visiting Scholar, United States Military Academy at West Point (2007). His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star. He currently serves by appointment from Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on the Defense Health Board's Psychological Health External Advisory Subcommittee.

This is a great book for starting to unravel the puzzle of organizational behavior. The class was great and based on trust. Before you can trust someone or thing, you have to know what to expect. This book gives that background knoweldge. There are also sections devoted to motovation. Team members will not be motovated as much if they don't trust you.

This is a great book and should be a key text for any major and really anyone who has ever or will ever have a job. This puts words to what we've all experienced in the workplace and has great insight into how to navigate co-workers and bosses. [...] was a great seller and there service exceeded my expectations when they took care of an issue that was USPS's fault.
