Karp writes well, addressing psychological, chemical, and cultural perspectives, with much credit to C. Wright Mills, Erving Goffman, and Arthur Kleinman. Many psychiatrists would agree that too little attention is paid to the nature of the pain and the impact of social context on our definitions of normality and treatment. Difficult to accept, yet precisely what we need

This book lays out the (in my opinion, correct) case that only those who have personally suffered from depression can thoroughly understand or put into words its prolonged, life-consuming grip on the victim. Some might complain it offers little hope, but that's not what someone who has suffered from it most of their life needs to hear anyway. They need to hear that this state of being isn't their fault and that others endure the same mental anguish. Possibly ways to mitigate the symptoms can be explored...but a complete cure is elusive for whatever reason and it's best to not hold out for or put others through false hope for one. I particularly recommend this book to the "intelligent depressed" who have because of the illness struggled to get by, or had aspirations dashed entirely. It can offer closure and self-acceptance. I'd even suggest lending it to relatives who give you a hard time cause they just don't get why someone can't get out of bed, or never shows improved moods.

Unlike short-term or cyclical depression brought on by specific events, for example death of a loved one, most of the 50 subjects are clearly in it for the long haul. Their improvement is negligible, and after countless therapists and prescriptions and even hospitalization, they often evoke nothing but contempt for the medical establishment. Who can blame them? Really though, it's quite difficult for others including therapists to relate, which is why I've found the personal testimonies and the author's insights far more useful than anyone else has been. It can be inspiring at times, such as the few interviewees who found ways to turn their morbid existence into creative outlets, or discovered some greater appreciation for the human struggle. In the end it's hard to not root for all of them to somehow emerge from this malaise.

Academic View of Illness

Karp is a sociologist who examines depression from a cultural point of view. Folks looking for a "quick cure" are not likely to be satisfied with this particular outing. However, folks looking to understand how society views those with depression, how folks with depression view society, and how the illness can also impact family members ... this is the place to go. I read this book as part of a medical anthropology curriculum ... an ethnography of an illness ... and found it to be quite enlightening. I have been in and out of treatment for depression myself over the years, and finding that so many people had similar experiences of reconstructing their self-view as a result of the illness was quite useful. Again, this book is definitely not a "quick fix" or "feel good" kind of book ... it's one that looks at the nitty-gritty of one of the country's most prevalent illnesses and examines the minutiae therein.

Really enjoyed this book. It teaches you about so many aspects that come with and are affected by depression. Not a self-help book, but pure information. Insightful, wonderful, deep read. A book for those who want to understand their suffering and don't want to fluff so many books come with these days.

About the Author

The author of Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success; Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man; and Straight Talk, No Chaser, Steve Harvey began doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s. This book is Very much on point !!

Steve you are very much on point in this book! I mean sometimes I must admit I do not take time to dress up for work because truly I just can't afford to. However what I have done is two-three days out the week I do dress up for work and boy do I get compliments. I have not got a man yet but I'm sure he is out there! Like you said there is always someone watching and taking note so thank you !

It is equally insightful and fun reading as his earlier book. It is not a rehashing of Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man. He explains that he thought he had exposed all there was to know about men in the first book but he was still being sought out for additional advice. One can read this book from start to finish or hop around chapters as needed but just be sure to finish the entire book! SH breaks it down using his own life experiences and that of others. Having been married for over 30 years, I have DH to confirm what the author writes as being generally true. Single ladies, you may want to take his advice along with the other advices you absorbed in the past. Married ladies, this is a nice refresher primer

Steve Harvey's books are very helpful and tell you the truth even if it stings. This book and his others helped me with previous and current relationships. Prior to reading his books I did not understand men at all. After reading them, everything came together. This one, in particular, allowed me to stay on the path that would help me to maintain current relationships and is great to read after his other book(s).

Perfect inspirational graduation present

Perfect inspirational graduation present, that I found myself wanting to keep. Just great life advice, pieces of wisdom, and moral lessons from some of the most wonderful modern thinkers like Howard Zinn & Noam Chomsky. This is especially great for the more left-minded crowd, as it features several key liberal figures. But there speeches are quite universal anyways, even if you're not a sharer of their particular political views. (I got it as a liberal, for my conservative niece who liked it just as well. The speeches have great range for all political view points, don't let who the contributors are fool you on that.)

A highly addicting, wild, and erotic ride.

I suspect that CD Reiss somehow laced my e-reader with a powerful narcotic, because when it comes to her books, there is a very addicting quality to them. I read the Songs of Submission series a couple of months ago, and was completely engrossed by them. Reading Spin (Theresa's spinoff) was just as addicting, but a story and characters completely different. Since I can't prove she's slipped me some highly addictive drug, I'm left with the simple fact that Reiss is a brilliant writer. The way she strings sentences, scenes, thoughts, and emotions together truly brings you into another world and hooks you into whatever journey she's taking you on. If you are familiar with Reiss's books, then you know she holds nothing back, and her books are not for the light romance reader. If you are unfamiliar, be prepared for an intense, erotic read.

As for the story itself, I found the developing relationship between Theresa and Antonio absolutely fascinating. Between their off-the-charts chemistry, their spiraling and intermingling personalities, the opposition of their worlds, and their whirlwind erotic romance, they are a couple that is not easily forgotten. Add into that Theresa's mayoral candidate ex-fianc�, Theresa's director friend who gets herself into a whole lot of trouble, Antonio's sketchy and mysterious resume, and Antonio's questionable associates, and you've got yourself a story full of action and intrigue that flows non-stop from beginning to end, not a dull moment in sight.

As for the sex, as you might have expected, the sex is rough, it's dirty, it's erotic. You've been warned. But it somehow fits these two characters and their dynamic completely. The romance is well-written, and though the sex is detailed, it's not excessive and overly verbose. I do confess that the shower scene was a bit of a stretch (pun intended) for me, and I found myself laughing when the scene wasn't funny. But other than that, this crazy romance was oddly believable and definitely hot. And there is just something beautiful and sensual about Antonio and Theresa that comes across the pages, even when they're being rough.

Overall, Spin is a highly addictive and wild ride, filled with suspense, danger, and sex. Antonio and Theresa are off-the-charts in more ways than one (hot, smart, a bit crazy). The writing will draw you in and keep your attention from start to finish. The ending is not a cliffhanger, but more a here's-where-they-are-for-now, but you'll be okay with that until the next book.

Spin (book 1) opens up to glum life of Theresa Drazen, Tink, the career woman, good sister, loyal friend and forgiving ex-fianc�'s life. Six months prior she had found her then fianc�, District attorney and Mayor of Los Angeles candidate, Daniel in bed with his speechwriter. Since then she has maintained a friendship with her ex, continued her work as the head of client accounting for talent agency WDE and had her long-time friend and movie producer Katrina move in while taking on the job has her script supervisor on her free-time. But on the inside she is tired of being composed, tired of the status quo.

One evening while out with her brother, Jonathan (Songs of Submission) she briefly meets a handsome stranger she can't forget. At another "chance" encounter a few days later she learns he is attorney Antonio Spinelli, Spin, recently arrived from Italy.

I loved Songs of Submission and eagerly awaited the release of this first book in her new series. The writing itself is very good and much better than you get in many romance novels but I just didn't connect with Spin and Theresa. Spin was more dark and violent mobster than sexy alpha male. We get a few glimpses into how he became "capo" of a crime family but his character is not nearly well developed enough for me to see him as anything more complex than a rich thug who has become obsessed with Theresa. She, of course, falls in love instantaneously because he is hot and smells like pine trees, completely ignoring the fact that at their first meeting he viciously broke a mans' nose and forced him to lick vomit off a car! There is not nearly enough history or back story for these two to believe that Theresa (or any woman) would do anything but run as far and as fast as she could to get away from him. As he stalks her and commits more acts of violence he proves himself to be an arrogant jerk who neither explains nor apologizes for his actions but instead either shuts down or outright lies when asked about them. She, as she begs for his attention and love proves herself to be desperate, weak and stupid. The side stories of her ex-fianc� and roommate are moderately interesting but not enough to offset the problems with the main story. I will probably read the other books in the series to see if she can salvage this mess but only because I so thoroughly enjoyed the first series. If you have not read Songs of Submission I strongly encourage you to forget this series and read that instead.

Great starting point for thinking of how to structure your wedding ceremony

This is a great starting place for newly engaged couples who are beginning to think about how they want to structure their wedding ceremony. It includes several samples of ceremony formats, as well as biblical readings and other material. You may think you know how to structure a wedding ceremony, since you undoubtedly have been to several weddings in your lifetime, but when I sat down to look at options for the ceremony, I didn't quite remember the specifics of wedding ceremonies I had witnessed, and wasn't sure where to start. This book is great for getting an idea of the cadence of the ceremony and different options for readings.

The majority of the material is religious-focused, so if you are looking to have a non-religious ceremony, don't expect this book to have your perfect ceremony listed in it. But even if you are planning a religious ceremony, you'll want to look through other books and not limit yourself to only this one when personalizing your ceremony.

An old-fashioned book is much easier to use for this sort of thing than an online search

This book made planning our ceremony fun and interesting. We picked what we liked from various sections and organized everything in the proper order. My fiancé thinks I'm a genius for finding it. We sat on the couch with coffee, both looking through the book. It was much nicer than lurking over a computer or tablet, switching from page to page. Kind of old fashioned, but more cozy and intimate than doing an online search for information.

Great resource

A couple of friends asked me to perform their ceremony, and who can say no to a request like that? I had never performed one before, and this book is one of the resources I turned to. I greatly enjoyed using it to help get a feel for what to say during the ceremony. However, it's more of a resource for people planning their own ceremonies than for someone who wants to perform one for someone else. Still, I found some of the phrasing in here helpful for the vows and other parts of the ceremony. I'd recommend this to people who are looking for ways to customize their own ceremonies.

About the Author
Pete Carroll is the coach of the Seattle Seahawks. He previously spent nine years as the head coach of the USC Trojans football team. Before coming to USC, he was the head coach of the New York Jets and the New England Patriots and defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. Carroll is also known for his charity work and will donate a portion of his proceeds to A Better LA, his nonprofit organization devoted to reducing gang violence in the most crime-plagued neighborhoods of Los Angeles. He and his wife, Glena, have three grown children.

Kristoffer A. Garin is a journalist who has written for the New York Daily News and the Journal News in Westchester, New York.

I am diehard Seattle Seahawks fan & have become a huge fan of Pete Carroll (the person) ever since he took over the reins of the 'Hawks. The dude has such an amazing outlook on life & you can make parallels to the football field, to the business world, to your personal life etc. You get some great insights into the "behind the scenes" type of things throughout Carroll's coaching career as well.

I highly recommend this book to ANY football fan or anyone in general, striving to be their best self everyday.

Great read - and money goes to a great cause

Nobody has ever won 7 consecutive conference titles or played in 7 straight BCS bowl games before Pete Carroll did it at USC. This is a great look into the philosophy that made this extraordinary level of success possible. For the football fan, it relives moments from some of the great victories at USC, as well as coaching experiences in the NFL. It also talks about the implementation of the Win Forever philosophy with the Seattle Seahawks, following the same rules of competition and positive reinforcement that created the run by the Trojans.

For the teacher, youth sports coach, or business person, the book provides a great structure for identifying your own philosophy and creating success around that core belief.

Finally, it is a great story of reaching out to the community in the program and the great opportunities to touch the lives of many people. You may be surprised to learn what was Coach Carroll's most memorable on-field moment with USC.

Pete Carroll has directed all of his personal earnings from the book to his foundation, A Better LA, which has a successful program of reducing gang violence.
