From the multi-award-winning Delta Teacher Development Series Film in Action convincingly places the moving image at the centre of the 21st century language learning agenda. This ground-breaking book shows how teachers can benefit enormously from the emergence of video distribution sites and the proliferation of mobile devices. The book invites teachers to experiment with film, and provides: insights into how learners can engage with film; it includes over 100 activities for teachers to bring film into the language class; and it also includes steps for teachers and learners to create their own moving images. We are living in an age of visual information and Film in Action takes on the challenge of the digital revolution to show teachers the educational benefits of not just watching but also creating moving images. Film in Action contains three distinctive parts, which focus in turn on theory, practice and development: Part A introduces the many different aspects of film: how it can inspire, while exposing learners to a wide range of authentic language, improving comprehension, intercultural understanding and visual literacy. Part B contains over 100 activities - from an exploratory look at film itself - across two chapters which move from responding actively to film to actively producing film. The activities are clearly and simply set out, mixing highly original ideas with reassuringly 'classical' procedures. Part C goes beyond the classroom into the wider school environment and into a world dominated by visual information, by looking at innovative ways to integrate moving images through longer, more complex projects.

An excellent teacher resource book
By Patrick Murphy
As an ELT professional of almost 20 years' experience, I have seldom come across such a useful teacher resource book. Kieran Donaghy inspires us with his vision of the use of moving image in the language classroom, and provides us with a wealth of practical ideas for teachers to try out. I have already used several of Kieran’s suggested lesson plans with different groups of students, and the response is always extremely positive – these ideas really engage students’ interest and get them talking. This book has instantly become one of my favourite ELT books both as a go to for lesson ideas and as an extremely well-written overview of the benefits and potential pitfalls of using short films and videos in the language classroom. I cannot recommend Film in Action highly enough..

By Ich Heisse Don!
This book is an extraordinary resource for English teachers - and any teacher who wants to explore film with their students in fresh, well-structured, and creative ways. The first part features an excellent lit review which convincingly argues the case for our need to devote much more class time to helping students develop not just literacy but film literacy and multiliteracies. This is a breath of fresh air.
Part B features a generous array of lesson plans for using films to develop students' language skills like listening/speaking/writing while also developing higher order thinking skills and visual/social/multi literacies. The lesson plans are clearly written, easy to put into practice, and even feature links to videos teachers can use if they don't have time to find short films on their own.
Part C is the really exciting part, where the book moves on to students actively producing their own responses to film, projects, and short films. This section is highly motivating and I'm really excited to put some of these projects to use with my teen and adult students. Finally the book closes with detailed advice on how to set up film clubs, film circles, or even film based language courses of your own. Well worth the money, I foresee myself incorporating this text into my teaching for years to come.

English Through Film and Film Through English
By Margarita Kosior
"Film in Action" by Kieran Donaghy, provides methodological background and practical solutions for those language teachers who are willing to incorporate film into their teaching curriculum.
The book covers all aspects of teaching English through film and teaching film and creative expression through English. It provides over a hundred ready-to-use and, most of them, easy-to-apply lesson plans and activities: a real time-saver for the teacher. An extensive list of additional resources adds to the pool of ideas. Kieran Donaghy's book is written in a very approachable manner and, by following clear guidelines and procedures, makes it easy for even a less experienced teacher to implement the ideas in the classroom.
