excellent guide

This book is an invaluable guide to writing about film. If you've never taken a film class, you need a book like this to get you used to the vocabulary, style and format of film criticism and theory. Numerous examples and lucid prose make this book easy to use and to read.

Pricey but Diffusive Writing Guide

Corrigan's Short Guide has been around for some time, and I've noticed that students have decidedly mixed responses to it. My responses are mixed as well.

It is true that Corrigan tends to wax a bit loquacious, letting wordy and meandering discussion often obscure the really important things he has to say. But speaking as a professor who teaches film courses and requires students to write critical essays about film, I must say that to date this is one of the best books on the market to address specifically the subject of writing about film (I think the best book is Tim Bywater's "Introduction to Film Criticism"--which, unfortunately, is also a ridiculously over-priced Longman title). But it bears noting that there simply aren't many books available which do address this specific subject, so my praise has to be understood in that context. And it's a shame that the book is priced over $40, which is a lot of money for a thin, 196 page paperback with some arguably serious flaws.

The book is divided into seven chapters: an introductory chapter explaining differences and similarities between movie reviews, theoretical essays and critical essays; a chapter about preparing to watch a movie and write about it; a chapter on film terms, concepts and writing topics; a chapter summarizing six approaches to writing about film (history, national cinemas, genres, auteurs, formalism, and ideology) with sample essays and exercises; a chapter on style and structure; and final chapters containing research advice (including internet research) and discussions of proofing, and using / citing sources. Appendices include a list of common editorial symbols, a glossary, and an index. Notable changes to the seventh edition include some helpful advice about documentary and avante-garde films, an expansion of the internet resource section, and more information about film sound. These are all welcome and significant enhancements.

There is a lot of sound advice in the text, and the sample essays are particularly helpful. But the book tries to do too many tasks (at least three big ones) and consequently, it does none of them as well as it could--or should. First, the text is part film appreciation guide, but its limited scope prevents it from effectively competing with books like Giannetti's "Understanding Movies" or Bordwell and Thompson's "Film Art: An Introduction," so any student serious about film criticism will need to read such books anyway, making Corrigan's contributions in this area paltry and often superfluous. Second, the text is part style, proofreading and writing guide, but again, cheap and much more comprehensive volumes like Hacker's "A Writer's Reference" do that task far better than can Corrigan so his effort here is mostly wasted. Third, the text is part film writing primer. This is the task on which Corrigan should have limited himself, given the obvious desire to keep the book small, and this is the aspect of the book that works best. Unfortunately, effort and space wasted on the other two tasks unnecessarily restrict what Corrigan does on this score. For example, his discussions (in the first and fourth chapters) of different approaches to film criticism and of different kinds of essays about film are each limited to a few meager pages. But these are the very subjects his book should have addressed in greatest detail. As already noted, the 7th edition includes improvements in this area, but not enough

In the end, Corrigan's book has lots of scattered insights and bits of advice that are great in and of themselves, but the more pertinent are sometimes under-developed and often lost in a sea of verbosity and diffusive aims. So, for the time being at least, while this may be one of the best available books on writing essays about film, it has its share of problems. It is thus almost as disappointing as it is helpful.

Intelligence and accessibility

This a marvelous book, packed with information and much more accessible than far more expensive books. It's the perfect companion for almost any film course since it not only introduces students to the language and methods of film analysis (including how to take notes) but does so while guiding students through the work of writing a good essay (with great suggestions for doing research). The writing is clear and accurate (with none of the errors referred to by the Kenosha reviewer). I recommend it without hesitation to all students of film.

About the Author

Steven Pratschner is a program manager on the .NET Compact Framework team at Microsoft. As a former team member for the full .NET Framework, he worked on several CLR features, including the versioning system, hosting, and the security system. Steven has written articles and presented at numerous conferences on a variety of topics related to .NET Framework-based programming. He holds computer science degrees from North Dakota State University and Santa Clara University.

Different prespective to CLR

Customizing CLR is very unique .NET book. The book presents CLR Hosting API - API that allows managed programs to be hosted in unmanaged processes. Even though API kicks-off every time you start managed program, Hosting API is not very well known API. The reason is simple. .NET provides default implementation of host that is sufficient in nearly every case. This book presents the ways how to customize this default host and how to create your own one.

The big question is if you really need to create own hosts. Honestly, I think 99.9 percent of developers will never need to create some. But still, if you are curious person who wants to know how .NET works 'under the hood' this book is great choice.

The book is well written. Writing style is easy to understand (at least for experienced developers) and the book doesn't not contain any 'filler' pages, like it is the case in many other IT books. One thing that could have been improved is code samples. The book doesn't contain many of them. It would be very helpful to have (dummy) reference implementation of every host manager that shows you how to implement them correctly. I had a few problems (memory leaks) while trying to do it. Unfortunately companion code doesn't contain such samples.

Even though Hosting API is COM based API you don't need to be a COM guru to use it. COM in hosting API is simpler (no SAFE ARRAYS, BSTR, no apartments). The only thing you need to know is how to implement and use IUnknown interfaces.

One important note. The book was written against prerelease of .NET 2.0.. In .NET 4.0. Hosting API has changed significantly. For instance all global functions are obsolete now, also many parts of CAS security. Fortunately all COM interfaces are perfectly valid, so if you overcome obsoleteness of global functions, it's is not so hard to port your code into later versions of .NET (I created my test projects under .NET 4.5.).

To sum up. Customizing CLR is helpful book for curious developers who want to know how CLR host managed applications. If you really need to write your own host - the book is absolute must.

One of the Definitive CLR Books

Having started in 1999, by the year 2002 I already felt old with the CLR/.NET. The exciting discovery phases were over by then. The dozen starting people of the DM CLR list had morphed intro thousands. Consequently, the year 2002, IMHO, saw the publication of the CLR/.NET books that defined the landscape and nothing really since then has really said anything that hadn't been said by then. 2002 saw the defining books of .NET such as Jeff Richter's Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming (I still insist it is the 1st book every .NET developer should read), Don's Essential .NET, The Shared Source CLI Essentials, and for the tortured souls stuck doing Interop, Adam's masterpiece, .NET and COM: The Complete Interoperability Guide. There were great books covering all of the areas of .NET. I had written most of my .NET info pages in 2001 and 2002. There was very little left to say and I felt that very little spoke to me after 2002. Phil Stanhope and I contemplated writing a book called "Non-Trivial .NET" because there was nothing coming out that was deep. Today, I got real excited like 2002 again as I stumbled across Steven Pratschner's Customizing the Microsoft .NET Framework Common Language Runtime. CLR wonks drool over this: A Tour of the CLR Hosting API, Controlling CLR Startup and Shutdown, Using the Default CLR Host, Using Application Domains Effectively, Configuring Application Domains, Loading Assemblies in Extensible Applications, Customizing How Assemblies Are Loaded, Domain-Neutral Assemblies, Extending the CLR Security System, Writing Highly Available Microsoft .NET Framework Applications, Enforcing Application-Specific Programming Model Constraints, Managing How the CLR Uses Memory, Integrating the CLR with Custom Schedulers and Thread Pools. In other words, the real stuff, the nitty gritty. This happens to be the kind of issues I now face with the CLR: hosting the CLR in "strange" containers and dealing with CLR shutdown and startup. Steve is in a unique position, having been on the original CLR team and now a PM for the .NET CF. If you want to go beyond VS.NET and do custom things with the CLR, this is the book for you. For example, the chapter Loading Assemblies in Extensible Applications is worth the price of admission alone. This is the kind of stuff that we do in our job and there is nothing out there about this. Highly Recommended!

This book does provide a great deal of valuable information for any .NET developer and is definitely a book worth reading. However, since the topic is a bit advance, it would certainly help if the example application used to illustrate extensible application architecture was more complete. The proposed example application 'Boat Race' started in chapter 5 provided a great beginning, but left the reader hanging even after reading chapter 6. The downloaded companion samples did not include any code sample for 'Boat Race', which was the main example used to explain the concept.

Foucault is a classic, must-read for any CJ/penology/criminology major. It is a little tedious, but nevertheless an important piece of literature that will help you gain insight into 1) the various forms and processes of punishment; and 2) how punishment has taken shape and evolved throughout history.

The Birth Of Modern Times

"Barely two hundred and fifty years ago a man condemned of attempting to assassinate the King of France was drawn and quartered in a grisly spectacle that suggested an unmediated duel between the violence of the criminal and the violence of the state" (Book Jacket). When compared to the modern tactics of contemporary prison, we can begin to see that we have not merely experienced an evolution, but a fundamental restructuring of our system. What Foucault is able to accomplish in the space of 300 pages is remarkable. We journey from the Medieval power struggles to the knowledge of modern times; a knowledge that has compelled us to abandon this confrontation between offender and offended.

What used to generate latent feelings of power and resoluteness in the mass has undergone a definite process of banalization. In other words, the violent forces meeting in an ultimate showdown of wills has been removed in favor of a shameful and boring "isolationism" for convicts. We follow the different streams of thought and custom, traversing the classical age until we find that "power" ultimately culminated into a new principle of societal order: surveillance. Or as utilitarian reformer Bentham terms it, the "panopticon" (That which sees all). With no words wasted, the style can be rough going, especially as terminology is introduced in the early chapters. However, the last 70 or so pages roar with ferocity through modern ideas and rationalizations of discipline and imprisonment.

It is easy to understand how Foucault was hated by conservative rationalists and system apologists. The approach taken is essentially anarchistic, in the sense that Foucault offers no alternative system and that he does not criticize certain trajectories in favor of others. He is fundamentally opposed to the current civilization (and this extends even beyond his beginnings in the pre-classical systems) Despite this, strong willed readers will appreciate the complete absence of dogma or moralizing rhetoric. In this way, the work is beyond criticism, except perhaps that this kind of knowledge tends to paralyze readers from action.

Ultimately, a close read will provide an unimaginable amount of value. We are shown the themes of modernity as they existed in their nascent stages, without wading through the endless legal and political details. Foucault is explicit that there are of course many other institutions that were ultimately governed by the same power/knowledge including hospitals and schools. I would encourage any active citizen to read this book as they make their way through their journey.

Excellent read

To those who have read Kane & Abel, The Fourth Estate is a bit of deja vu. The plot is essentially the same. Two men - one a refugee from a war, the other an Ivy League-educated millionaire get pitted against each other and will not cease until the other man is driven out of business. The action is rivetting and makes the book a compelling page-turner.
The book is actually based on real-life characters, and a few real incidents too. Readers will find it tough not to see the similarity between Keith Townsend and Rupert Murdoch.
The way the story is woven is also reminiscent of Kane & Abel, however the book does not sag one wee bit in action. I assign five stars to this book because that's the maximum!

A must-read summer vacation book!

At last, Archer brings us back to the classic man-against-man novel, as in his successful "Kane and Abel". This is a must-read novel, full of wonderful character development, clever, yet manipulative story lines and riveting endings at each chapter.

From the opening chapter the reader is totally immersed in the two main characters -- Armstrong and Townsend, from two completely different backgrounds. Their lives seem lifelike, and not plastic and phony, like many authors characters. The reader becomes emotionally attached to one of the charcters, and cheers for their favorite one, right until the bitter end. The plot twists are so remarkable, and riveting, it is easy to read 200+ pages in one sitting!

One wonders how Archer continually comes up with such brilliant ideas. The only bad thing about this 750 page novel was reading the last chapter. If only all novels were this excellent

A Great Read

Jeffrey Archer is one of those authors - the kind that people love to hate. He writes fiction that requires no real thinking to get through, just a great sense of wanting to be entertained.
In the Fourth Estate, Archer describes the lives of two ficticious (although clearly based on some well-known real life moguls) newspaper barons. He explains their differing beginnings (one humble, one rich) and intersperses this with the story of a battle to win a business empire.
The story is every part the cliche "page turner", especially towards the end, when the climactic chapters and the way they build up a great sense of suspense is testament to the enjoyable experience you have reading this book.
This was my first Jeffrey Archer novel that I'd read - if you're in the same position it's a great place to start.

One of the Best Books I have read as an adult

When I went to the seminary this was a book one of my professors recommended so I got it and read through it in a couple of hours and was amazed at how in-depth this book is for as small as it is. The first time I read this book was in 1993 and I have read it at least once a year since then. Sometimes I have misplaced the tiny paperback and get upset when I can't find it. I was really pleased when this came out for the kindle and I was able to get it for free. If you are a spiritual person you will want to read this book and believe me it is a quick read and very enlightening. If you put the practices of Brother Lawrence to work in your own spiritual life you will experience a deeper commitment and understanding of God. I recommend this book to people of all ages and suggest that if you have read it once read it again. Every time I read it I find a new jewel of wisdom I can grab onto and grow closer to God.

A short discussion of this book was presented in "Love Says Go" by Jason Chin and it piqued my interest. "The Practice of the Presence of God" is absolutely the most wonderful and inspiring testimony of one who placed his complete trust in God and communicated with Him at a level that many of us today would find beyond our reach today; but is it? I am finding that it is not, although I dare say that I could achieve his level of humility and persistent faith.

The book is not so much written by Brother Lawrence as it is a compilation of letters, thoughts, and finally a short biography written by a dear friend. The thoughts of Brother Lawrence span the centuries since they were first penned but they are messages that encourage, heal, and inspire the believer today. I have read it and keep pulling it off the shelf for encouragement.

This is a classic that I hadn't read before. But I'm glad that I read it now. Brother Lawrence doesn't advocate anything that is complicated, which I believe we too often try to make being in God's presence. Instead, there's a beauty in the simplicity of the practices he advocates. It's not a long read, but it's definitely good.

Hunter's story is great!

In this continuation of the Sons of Privilege series, we get to dig deeper into Hunter's story. He intrigued us in the last book when he was such a sweetheart to King's little boy, and he proves to be just as sexy this time around! This is a fast read and keeps you intrigued as to whether they will truly find the answers they are looking for.

Hunter Caruthers was falsely accused of murdering his college girlfriend 10 years ago, and is still trying to find the answers as to what happened. His best friend Kingsley Buchanan was arrested right along side him and they both want to be able to clear their names once and for all and move on with their lives.

Ferrin Gainer is visiting her father to care for him after an illness. They aren't close, and she finds it awkward to be there, but when Hunter comes knocking at the door, she's happy she is! Hunter wants to talk to Ferrin's father, who was their coach back in the day to see if he can help clear up some of the events of that night. He's willing to woo his daughter however he has to in order to get a look at any possible evidence.

When it suddenly becomes more than just wanting answers, will Hunter be able to move forward with a future with Ferrin even if he can't settle the past?

Intrigue, romance, soul-searching -- a three-fer!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have read the first book in the Sons of Privilege (His Baby Agenda, which is King’s story) and was very glad to read about Hunter. This story is about finding out the details and truths about what happened to tear both the lives of these two men apart.

Hunter is extremely close with King and his young son. They have been a team/unit since high school and all thru the tragedy that occurred to them. I won’t go into the story – you need to read it for yourself. Although this book can be read on its own, I highly recommend you read the first book so that you can get to know and enjoy all the characters.

When Hunter goes to his former football coach, to try to fill in some missing blanks to “the” fateful night for him and King, he meets Ferrin Gainer – Coach’s estranged daughter. She has returned to Coach’s house to help him thru some medical issues and to try to mend their relationship. His Seduction Game Plan is about Ferrin and Hunter, but also about solving mysteries and healing lifelong grievances, and finally finding the road to happiness for them both.

Good story, great characters, and a thoughtful read. I recommend.

I absolutely loved this story! I couldn't put it down. It continues with Hunter and King trying to find out the truth and solve the mystery about the murder. Will they find the answers they're looking for? Hunter searching for answers reaches out to their former football coach. Did their former coach betray him? What he encounters is the coach's daughter Ferrin. The attraction is strong and sparks fly. Will Ferrin forgive Hunter when she finds out the real reason Hunter is there? Will Hunter be able to move on with Ferrin if he doesn't find answers? This is a great story. You will fall in love with the characters and will not be disappointed.

Not an actual story to help kids learn - List of pointers that get religious

Ordered this book to read with my 6 year old who is struggling with expressing his anger in a healthy way. Since he is getting in trouble for hitting a lot lately, he is now saying that he's "the worst kid ever". I thought this book would help explain how being mad does not mean you are a bad person, everyone gets mad, and maybe a few tips on healthy ways to express angry in a story format. I'm glad I read the book first without him... there is a page in the middle about being angry with god and some religious points. I don't think it was necessary to be in the book, especially since it was not marked as a religious book. Another reason I did not like the book is that I thought it would be in story format. It is not in story format, it is categorized and then gives tips for each category (that seemed to be too mature for kids to understand). There is no story line at all. I don't know how a kid would stay engaged. Very disappointed and will be donating the book. On the plus side, the art work was cute and the book seemed sturdy.

This book has a good message for children regarding expressing anger appropriately; however, it is a little long and detailed for younger children. I would say it's better suited for ages 7+. The illustrations were good and the writing was well done.
