Couldn't finish

I REALLY wanted to like this book, but the writing was extremely hard to accept. It was stilted and awkward and leaned toward the confusing in that you'd finish a sentence and have to consciously think about what they were trying to say. Conversations were choppy and I just couldn't see the story for the words.

Characters were stilted, no real chemistry between any of them. Over the top descriptions that were way too 'in-your-face' of what they want to do to each other, w/ little follow-through. People would not talk to each other like they did, even in a suspended reality kind of way. The character's came across as shallow, needy, and just a bit 'mental' in my view. All four of them!

This wasn't really a true menage, in a sense. There was Kate/Tom & Mike/John. With what came across more like partner swapping than anything else. Kate & Tom invite the other two to play, permanently. That's what I got.

The suspense was also overdone & convoluted and required an intro to characters you care little for who may be a set up for a future series - which I will not buy. The time spent on this could have been better spent developing the main characters instead.

Very annoying read. I had to make myself finish it. I also agree with another reviewer, it was choppy.

If you want to read an enjoyable foursome menage w/ suspense please read: Playing Four Keeps by Kris Norris - sooo much better!

Promising storyline, but didn't live up to it

The mystery part of this story was interesting, but the relationships between the four main characters left me kind of flat. Especially the relationship between the three men and the woman. I didn't get what she brought to their relationship. I kept feeling like there was a previous novel that would help me understand the characters and care about them more. Also, I found myself a little annoyed about how gushy everyone's language was - do they really need to proclaim their undying love every time they enter and leave a room? It felt false to me. The author would do better to demonstrate how loving their relationship is, rather than having the characters state it every other page.

About the Author

Penelope J. E. Davies is Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. She is a scholar of Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as a field archaeologist. She is author of Death and the Emperor: Roman Imperial Funerary Monuments from Augustus to Marcus Aurelius, winner of the Vasari Award.

 

Walter B. Denny is a Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In addition to exhibition catalogues, his publications include books on Ottoman Turkish carpets, textiles, and ceramics, and articles on miniature painting, architecture and architectural decoration.

 

Frima Fox Hofrichter is Professor and former Chair of the History of Art and Design department at Pratt Institute. She is author of Judith Leyster, A Dutch Artist in Holland’s Golden Age, which received CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund Award.

 

Joseph Jacobs is an independent scholar, critic, and art historian of modern art in New York City. He was the curator of modern art at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, director of the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and curator of American art at The Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey.

 

David L. Simon is Jetté Professor of Art at Colby College, where he received the Basset Teaching Award in 2005. Among his publications is the catalogue of Spanish and southern French Romanesque sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters.

 

Ann M. Roberts, Professor of Art at Lake Forest College has published essays, articles and reviews on both Northern and Italian Renaissance topics. Her research focuses on women in the Renaissance, and her most recent publication is entitled Dominican Women and Renaissance Art:The Convent of San Domenico of Pisa.

I've read several art history books including several editions of Janson, and every book has it's strengths. But Janson is still my favorite. The images are large, the text is concise, historical context is provided, and you learn how to read art. Art has a vocabulary and Janson explains it best.

The first volume of Lecture Notes in Quantum Chemistry (Lecture Notes in Chemistry 58, Springer Verlag, Berlin 1992) contained a compilation of selected lectures given at the two first European Summer Schools in Quantum Chemistry (ESQC), held in southern Sweden in August 1989 and 1991, respectively. The notes were written by the teachers at the school and covered a large range of topics in ab initio quantum chemistry. After the third summer school (held in 1993) it was decided to put together a second volume with additional material. Important lecture material was excluded in the first volume and has now been added. Such added topics are: integrals and integral derivatives, SCF theory, coupled-cluster theory, relativity in quantum chemistry, and density functional theory. One chapter in the present volume contains the exercise material used at the summer school and in addition solutions to all the exercises. It is the hope of the authors that the two volumes will find good use in the scientific community as textbooks for students, who are interested in learn� ing more about modern methodology in molecular quantum chemistry. The books will be used as teaching material in the European Summer Schools in Quantum Chemistry, which are presently planned. I have heard most of these stories before, and actually told much better. Not all the facts were correct and the spelling and grammar were horrible. None of the stories were terrifying, just the same stories rehashed and not very well.

Very, very short book, only 37 pages

I got this title when it was free and at free was good enough to earn 3 stars, because I did like the very short ghost stories. But if I'd paid more than say 99 cents I would have probably returned it. It's only 37 pages and the stories are really short, just a list of the ghosts and how, why and where they are seen. Even at this short, it could have used one more edit go round to catch a number of little punctuation errors.

Still, the stories were well written and entertaining.

I picked this book for some light reading.
I was familiar with many of the stories in the book. However, there were some I had actually never heard of. After reading about the ones I hadn't heard of, I did a little research of my own. Many of the stories were found to be somewhat interesting.

I did find some discrepancies in some of the stories, though. This may only be in the Kindle version of the book (I am not certain).
1) Amityville Horror Movie- It states that the movie was set in 1948, which is a clear error. It was set in Dec. 1975- Jan. 1976.
2) Annaleise (and her 76 exorcisms)- According to all the information I was able to find, it was 67 exorcisms.

There were several typos in the ebook, making it a bit hard to follow in some spots. (Like the Lizzie Borden BREAD and Breakfast Museum- seriously, that's what it says! and changing pronouns from masculine to feminine, sometimes in the same sentence.) When you're a little OCD, this can be bothersome.

These are just a few of the errors I found.

Overall, it was OK.
